So much to see and learn about here. The children enjoyed it and we grown-ups learned a lot more about Thor Heyerdahl and about some of the places he researched.

We took a boat trip from oslo harbour and got off across the bay where there are several museums to visit. We really enjoyed our visit to the KonTiki museum with tales of the high seas and human endeavour - good exhibition with the actual boats used for the expeditions, plenty of info about the teams on the boats, the local wildlife etc

City break in Oslo
Mar 2020
The Kon Tiki museum is easy to get to as the 31 bus stops outside and you can get on it lots of place in the town. It also goes to all the attractions in the peninsula. We entered free on our Oslo card and must have spent nearly 2 hours looking at the 2 boats Kon Tiki and Ra 2. Both boats are amazing and the whole exhibition was very interesting about the journey, what they too, how and why they constructed the boats.

A great museum dedicated to the 1947 Kon-Tiki expedition led by Thor Heyerdahl across the pacific and subsequent journeys undertaken by Thor and his companions. Whether you have heard of this epic journey before or are finding out about it for the first time this museum is informative and interesting. The original kon-tiki raft is here and that alone is worth the entry ticket.

Top-of-the line exhibits and overall quality

My Mom used to read us accounts of Thor Heyerdahl and the amazing Kon-TIki. To actually see (and touch) it was an awesome experience! A reminder...The Kon-Tiki expedition was a 1947 journey by raft across the Pacific Ocean from South America to the Polynesian islands, led by Norwegian explorer and writer Thor Heyerdahl. The raft was named Kon-Tiki after the Inca god Viracocha, for whom "Kon-Tiki" was said to be an old name. Kon-Tiki is also the name of Heyerdahl's book, the Academy Award-winning documentary film chronicling his adventures, and the 2012 dramatized feature film nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Heyerdahl believed that people from South America could have settled Polynesia in pre-Columbian times. His aim in mounting the Kon-Tiki expedition was to show, by using only the materials and technologies available to those people at the time, that there were no technical reasons to prevent them from having done so. Although the expedition carried some modern equipment, such as a radio, watches, charts, sextant, and metal knives, Heyerdahl argued they were incidental to the purpose of proving that the raft itself could make the journey. More recent theories cast serious doubt on the original premise, but it doesn't lesson the effort and bravery of the crew. Highly recommend!

A great learning experience
Oct 2019
On our way to the Fram museum we came across this one first and decided to pop in and see what it was about. None of us had a clue what Kon-Tiki was when we walked in the door but we were all very well informed by the time we left. The film, exhibitions and history were all very well presented and interesting to read about. It was great to have the boat models there to put into scale what the excursion across the ocean must have been like. There was a lot we learned and I thoroughly enjoyed this museum.

Interesting history behind the rafts
The Kon-Tiki museum can be reached by bus 30 from the city area, and it gave an interesting insight into the life of Thor Heyerdahl and his adventures. However, the entry price seemed a bit steep (120NOK for adults) compared to the other nearby museums though. We also walked to the nearby ferry terminal just behind Fram museum, and saw that the ferry does not accept Ruter ticket.
