What to expect
  • By the summer of 1940, Mauthausen Concentration Camp had become one of the largest labor camp complexes in the German-occupied part of Europe. Some 200,000 people are thought to have been imprisoned at Mauthausen between 1938 and 1945, and about half of them lost their lives. Mauthausen was the last camp complex to be liberated by the Allies. Begin your day with a cab ride from your hotel to central Vienna to join up with your driver. Hold on to your receipt so that your cab cost can be repaid after your trip. Climb aboard your comfortable tour vehicle, meet your friendly English-speaking tour escort and become acquainted with the history of Mauthausen Memorial during the ride from Vienna. Relax as you journey through the countryside of Lower and Upper Austria. Arrive at Mauthausen Memorial, a building that stands on the site of the former Mauthausen Concentration Camp. Grab your audio guide (available in 11 languages) and begin touring independently through the grounds. See Wiener-Graben quarry, the prisoners’ barracks, the so-called 'Stairs of Death,' SS-quarters, gas chamber, camp prison and the Mauthausen Museum for more historical background on the camp and WWII. Afterward, climb back aboard  tour vehicle and begin the drive back to Vienna. There will be a stop for lunch at a local restaurant (own expense.) You will be returned to the Vienna State Opera in Downtown Vienna.

Well worth the visit
Feb 2020 • Solo
I met our guide at Tourist Info Wien (right off the U1 line at Karlsplatz stop). He explained a lot of helpful history to us on the ride over and then had us watch a short documentary of the concentration camp on iPads in the van which was very wise. We got to Mauthausen with a greater and more In-depth understanding of what took place there which made our visit more meaningful. When we arrived we were given audio guides and a map and allowed to wander the camp and it’s museum on our own for a few hours before reconvening. It was pretty desolate aside from a few school groups visiting. Our tour guide was great and even drove us down into the granite quarry so that we could see it up close. We went to lunch at a nice but casual sit down restaurant that served Austrian cuisine. Overall worth the money and I highly recommend this tour.

I’d like to say this was an managing tour, but that seems weird when you take into account the atrocities that happened here. Whilst I could only imagine the horrors that took place, it puts our lives into perspective & helps to understand what we have gained from those that lost their lives. The tour itself was great & our driver was knowledge. He even dropped us back to our hotel after the trip.
If you are looking for an activity to really get you thinking & feeling, this is for you. See where so many lost their lives for the freedom that we all enjoy.

Day trip to Mauthausen
We were met by our tour guide Fleming in front of tourist information in Central Vienna. Very easy to find and if you need a taxi this will get reimbursed. Comfortable vehicle.
Drive out to camp gave us a chance to experience the beauty of the Vienna countryside. Our guide Fleming was extremely knowledgeable and told the history of Vienna and WW1 and WW2 tying it all together in an understandable way. You then watch a 40 minute documentary on the Camp which gives a visual perspective prior to the camp itself.
On arrival you get a audio guide and move through the camp alone. I preferred this to an accompanying guide as you can spend reflective time in quiet areas. The tour ends in a modern and excellently curated area with very detailed information.
Fleming took us down to the quarry as the Stairs of Death have been closed to the public due to safety reasons.
My 13 year old daughter managed this tour well though there is a part in documentary that is very graphic.

On the way home we stopped for lunch which is not included in the tour.
In my view if you have the time this tour is a must to understand more fully the history of Austria. Thanks Fleming for sharing your knowledge.

Dec 2019
Terrible place and as related to Jews who escaped, I was really upset, and still am, by the horrors. However, it is really worth going, to see why it was so important we won the war, as the Austrians were as horrific as the Germans and actually tried to escape responsibility for their terribel actions until very recently - even said they were the first "victims" until 2010! Very gald our love guide Flemming, was actually Danish, as we found many Austrians were still not accepting of their responsibilty and actually very unpleasant.
I could have spent more time reading, as a lot of information and much to see there. Well organised with hand-held device to give information at each point, but I think there could have been signs to help direction and information on some of the sites.
I am gald that I went and would really recommend Flemming at Expedia as your guide, but it is horrifying and reading more about it since, makes me really unsettled that any human could do these things to other people and enjoy them- I read the commander gave his gun to his 11 year old son to take pot shots at Jews with.

Mauthausen visit
This trip was great. Tom (our driver/guide) was excellent. He was knowledgeable and very well spoken. Departure was right on time. The ride out to the camp was both enjoyable and educational. The time allotted at the camp is just right and the lunch stop on the way back is perfect (recommend the goulash). What makes the trip so worth while is the driver/guide and Tom was a 10/10. Well worth the $$ and well worth the experience.

Informative Trip
Nov 2019 • Couples
My wife and I enjoyed our trip. Markus was an excellent driver and guide. The museum and site were very sobering and helped to further educate us about some of the most terrible activities carried out by the Third Reich during WWII. Plan to spend plenty of time inside the museum itself- two hours inside and another one to two hours walking the grounds and looking in the other buildings.

Very Informative
This trip was well worth the time and money. We had a great guide who shared very interesting stories both personal and historical about Vienna, the war, and The Mauthausen Concentration Camp. Visiting the camp itself was a very interesting experience. It was hard to digest all of the information about the horrors that occurred there but it is without a doubt worth visiting if you are going to be in Vienna. It’s such a huge part of history and those who endured that horrific place deserve to have there stories heard. We were at the camp for about 2 - 2 1/2 hours and there was no shortage of things to see/learn. I highly recommend this day trip.

Totally recommend this trip! The driver and guide was very informative and went out of his way to make our experience special! The camp itself is very informative and sad but the audio guide was excellent and really helped you to understand. After the tour the guide took us for lunch near by in an Austrian restaurant which was lovely. Couldn’t recommend this tour enough!

The tour conducted by Flemming was extremely informative and unforgettable. He provided an excellent overview of the political turmoil of the time, as well as the dark history of the camp, and the systematic dehumanization of people. While it is a very difficult subject to confront, the tour was one of the most compelling and valuable lessons that one can and should experience. We highly recommend it.

Dear adios5, thank you very much for taking the time to share your experience! We are glad to hear that you enjoyed the tour and that Flemming was able to provide a historical context. A visit of Mauthausen Memorial is certainly not your typical vacation activity but, as you say, a valuable lesson and experience. Thanks again! Marlies & the Vienna à la carte team
