- Scottco780 contributionsGreat Horses and CrewGreat place to ride horses in Iceland. Crew is great. Horses are sweet and calm. Highly recommend for anyone interested in riding Iceland’s amazing horses.Written 4 January 2024
- Melissa S0 contributionsAwesome horseback ridingMy family and I booked a Black Beach tour and it didn’t disappoint. The staff was so friendly and educated us about Iceland! It was cold and windy, but so worth the trip to see the beach on horseback. They made time for pictures!Written 12 March 2023
- Auhornet0 contributionsVery Cool - Horseback Riding on Black Sand BeachHorseback Riding is really my wife's thing but being able to do it on Black Sand Beach was pretty spectacular. The guides were very nice and asked about each rider's experience and comfort level. The Icelandic horses are a bit shorter and squattier than those in the states and their trot is much smoother. Got to traverse a creek along with a light trot at the end of the ride. I'm not a big horseback guy but I was very comfortable the whole time. My wife was thrilled and the experience was great!Written 20 October 2022
- irinasK3435PN0 contributionsGreat experienceReally fun experience with very friendly guides & an amazing view of the ocean. Definitely recommended, even if you've never ridden a horse before (which was my case).Written 8 October 2022
- michellewire10 contributionsBook this tour! What a great time! Super patient guides. We had four people with varying degrees of experience and they made everyone comfortable and confident. They were clear on what to expect, how to work as a team with your horse and laid out every step. Very kind people and beautiful horses and scenery. I also needed to switch my booking since the road was closed and they were super accommodating!Written 13 March 2020
- 192lizza0 contributionsVery fun experienceMyself (experienced rider) and boyfriend (complete novice) came here and both thoroughly enjoyed. Guides were super friendly and talked the group through, and chatted to us throughout. Dismounted and took pictures for us all (great pictures too!) we got to do the tölt too which was fun! Not a challenging ride so if you are looking for a full trek it’s probably not ideal, but if you’re looking for a fun and different way to see the black beaches then definitely do this!!Written 25 February 2020
- Jill M0 contributionsAMAZING - Black Sand Beach Horse TourMy husband, son (16 years) and I went on the Black Beach Riding Tour. The tour guides were patient and experienced. I was apprehensive and they me feel very comfortable, chose the appropriate horse for me, and stayed with me until I became comfortable. They put you in groups based on ability, therefore, everyone receives the right experience. I highly recommend this company and would definitely use them again.Written 1 December 2019
- Tamara K0 contributionsSo much fun - Icelandic Horses are the best!My husband found this tour and booked it and I am so glad that he did. We arrived early and were promptly greeted and checked in by friendly staff who let us walk around the stables and pet the horses while we waited for the tour to begin. When you walk around the stables you will find the bios of all the different horses working including their age and fun information about their personalities. My husband and I were paired with the horses Isac and Kvika, who we both quickly got to know their personalities and quirks which was very fun. Prior to the tour the guides walked us through important safety information as well as taught us how to use the reigns, where to hold them, important commands and how to position the body and more. I have only been horseback riding a few times in my life so I am not experienced and I found their instructions to be simple to learn and effective. One thing to note, I have seen in other reviews people have photographs they took from horseback, we were instructed not to use our phones while riding. This was due to safety and they requested that our hands remain on the reigns at all times. Since we were not allowed to take pictures ourselves, the guides led us to a very beautiful and scenic location on the beach where they took pictures of everyone including a group shot (if you were with multiple people) and a shot of you by yourself. And then before we left the guides helped us all find our horses bios so we could all take photos of the horses we road which was really neat. All the horses seemed very healthy, well cared for and happy. I was impressed with how well the staff new their horses and behaviors. At one point during the tour my horse Kvika was following too close to the horse in front which was upsetting the horse in front. The guide had me pull out of line and go in front of that horse so to make sure all the horses were happy and comfortable. Kivka ended up following to close to the horse my husband was on (Isac), but he didn't mind at all. Later on when we re-formed the line Kvika hurried to be in the front and cut infront Isac (who once again didn't mind). I also noticed Kvika didn't like walking in the center of mud puddles and despite my direction she would go around. These were the fun little quirks I mentioned above and how each horse is different, getting to know the horse was my favorite part. This is a long review (bare with me) but one other mention, the stables provide helmets (required) and gloves (optional) for your use.Written 30 October 2019
- Adam B0 contributionsWonderful ExperienceAs a former trail-riding instructor in Wyoming, USA, I was delighted that our guide, Hilary, allowed us to have an enjoyable and high-tempo experience with our horses Spordur and Lotta. Hilary first ensured our safety, as any proper guide should, but eventually gave us the opportunity to trot, canter, and even push our horses toward a gallop across the beaches. Throughout, Hilary was a fantastic conversationalist and she talked with me and my sister endlessly throughout the ride. I cannot say enough about my horse. Spordur was agreeable, allowing me to break from the group and run off the beaten path Hilary and her horse were setting. He was responsive and light-mouthed. Overall, he allowed me to be an active rider and gave me a great experience.Written 7 October 2019
- ataraxia120 contributions" What fun! Who cares if it was cold and rainy?"There were just the 2 of us on our tour, but out we went. Sanna, our guide, was experienced and helpful and genuinely likes her job. They gave us rain pants and gloves . ( We had waterproof jackets on already). My friend was not an experienced rider and had no interest in trotting. I wanted to experience that Icelandic gait, so at the end we dropped off my friend at the stables, and Sanna took me out . We trotted down the road , and I laughed the entire way. What fun . The horses are beautiful and gentle and we loved the experience. Thank you Sanna!!Written 3 October 2019
- sarahMF86753090 contributions100% recommend them!Neither my husband nor I had ever ridden a horse. That was not at all a problem for them. Both of our horses were super chill. I had a heck of a time getting on my chubby horse, the staff had no problem helping me up. We had bad weather that day, lots of rain, so what was booked as a group tour became a private tour as we were the only ones who booked. I loved that our tour went out anyway instead of rescheduling us to another time. Even more lucky, the weather stopped raining just before our tour and started again just after. They also had great waterproof gear for us to borrow. It was so lovely riding on the black same beach. We got to try a Tolt, a very special gait that only Icelandic horses can do. (Iceland has very strict laws governing their horses. You’ll only see Icelandic horses in Iceland) The best part of the tour for my husband and I? We got to do a river fjord!!!! :-D that was so amazing for us. My husbands horse kept trying to stop for snacks, mine had to wear a bag on her nose to keep her from snacking, they were both so chubby and cute. The guide, whose name I’ve forgotten, was so wonderful. She stopped on the beach, moved our horses into a better position, and took a bunch of photos on our phones. We were also allowed to bring our GoPro, the only rule is it had to be on the helmet or chest mount. :-) We had a great time, laughed a lot, and that is a memory we will cherish forever!Written 3 October 2019
- barduif0 contributionsWe loved it!Dreams coming true.. ❤️✨🌈🐴 My friend Renske and I had booked a tour at @vikhorses to go ride on the Black sandy beaches in the south of Iceland. When you book a tour you never know how big the group will be and if you will only go walking. And we were lucky because we were the only 2. So with 2 great guides we went riding. And we loved it so ❤️ We did the tölt with the tour. And it feels so funny haha. But pretty comfy. And when the guide asked if we wanted to canter/gallop along the beach, my smile became even bigger 😁 I looove to gallop in full speed along the beach! So that’s what we did. Facing all the elements of nature. Wind, hail, rain, sun. We had it all during our 1 hour ride. The horses are beautiful and just amazing and our guides Hilary and Virginia the best! Tnx so much!Written 25 September 2019
- Priscilla T0 contributionsFun experience!I have minimal experience riding horses, but after seeing all the lovely Icelandic horses I felt obligated to go horseback riding along the beach with my husband. What a fun experience! I felt perfectly safe the entire time, and all of the horses were so calm and comfortable. We also had 3 tour guides with our group, and they frequently checked in on us to ensure we were comfortable with the pace and the ride. After spending some time getting to know our horses (mine was Lelo aka Grandpa), we were able to try tolting along the beach. The entire tour lasted somewhere between 1-2 hours, and it was an excellent experienceWritten 22 September 2019

- X6075JXnancyk0 contributionsWonderful guide, beautiful horse, incredible locationThis is definitely an activity you shouldn’t miss. They kindly fit me in after my ice cave tour. Lisa was great company and thankfully freely shared information about Icelandic horses. I knew they were special, but did not know that they have two more gaits than ordinary horses. We walked, trotted and tolted along the black sand beach and under the gorgeous green cliffs with birds and hang gliders soaring high above us. An indescribably beautiful experience.Written 8 September 2019

My father fell off of the horse at the last stretch of the 'jogging' part of the ride. Not only did the horse not stop after my father fell off, his foot got caught and the horse dragged him 30 meters before anyone noticed anything. He was at the very back of the line. The guide that was supposed to be behind/beside him couldn't even control her horse and went in front of him, so no one even noticed him falling or being dragged by the horse. Worse is that my father had already once raised concerns about falling off just minutes before, and they STILL did not make sure to stay behind him and watch out for him.
They did nothing to help him afterwards, only asking if he was okay once or twice. There are no hospitals in Vik, the closest one an hour and a half to three hours away. They did not offer any assistance whatsoever. They were too afraid we would retaliate in anyway to even really look at or talk to us. They paid us no more attention as soon as the people from the next tour started arriving, as if they held no responsibility for the failures of their guides. After we finally got home and went to the hospital, we find that he has two fractured ribs. They are COMPLETELY IRRESPONSIBLE in both the guides and the 'trained' horses.
Their horses are not well trained at all. They don't listen to the commands they briefly tell you about, and once the horses see the other horses speeding up, they definitely don't listen to you, even if you harshly pull on their reins. I almost got jostled off a few times myself, and was barely able to keep my balance.
Everyone in my family has ridden horses before, and never was a company so irresponsible as theirs. Their directions are quick and they don't project their voices enough past the wind - and there is a LOT of wind and rain in Vik - to be properly heard. I just can't believe that the guide was not behind my father on the most dangerous part of the journey. It was clear looking at the guides that they also did not have full control over their own horses. When the horses saw the ones ahead of them speeding up, they did the same and you are really just along for the ride - and an incredibly bumpy one at that. Your entire body gets ejected off of the horse every time it jogs and leaves you scrambling to hold on, and even if you yank the reins tight the horse does nothing to slow down. Both my father and I tried, many times. They do not prepare you at all for what you need to do when the time comes.
No talk of refunds, or an effort to train the horse better, or covering any part of the medical expenses. They are lucky he fell on a beach or he would have definitely broken bones instead of fractured them. The experience itself was underwhelming already, as you only spend about 5 or 10 minutes max at the actual beach part, and the rest of the time is spent walking towards the beach. But the irresponsibility of the company is what really makes them a complete disappointment. Almost ruined the entire trip to an otherworldly country. I cannot even express my displeasure properly in one review.

We are sorry to hear you had a bad experience with us and we hope your father is recovering well.
We give instructions at the beginning and during the ride to try and help everyone, as most of our riders are first timers or beginners. Guides try to watch throughout the tour to make sure everyone is doing ok, but we are only human and of course may miss something; we will learn from this and be even more careful on future tours. It is true there is a lot of wind in Vík, which can make hearing instructions harder, but it is no problem to just ask us to repeat if you didn't hear or understand.
There is never any pressure to go faster if you don't want to, as it can feel bumpy to inexperienced and unbalanced riders - so we take multiple guides on each tour so that we can split up and some can remaning walking if they like - indeed, some other people did this on your tour and it would have been no problem for you and your father to join them. We also give extra instructions for those trying the jogging, but it is of course your responsibility to listen and follow them: guides cannot ride the horse for you.
Horses are herd animals and any rider will have a hard to time to stop them if the rest of the group is speeding up, as you are asking them to stay back from the herd. Horses are not machines, and may react in their own way: this is an inherent risk of horse riding, and you accepted the risks by signing in for our tour. We do our best to choose calm and good-natured horses but beginner riders (by the very nature of them being inexperienced) may not always ride correctly - if you are "harshly pulling" and "yanking" as you suggest, maybe the horse did not like being treated so roughly.
After your father fell a guide walked with him back to the stable and offered towels to clean up the sand, take time to talk to you and point out the closest hospitals, offer to call an ambulance or the local doctor, but if you repeatedly say you are fine, then eventually we have to take your word for it and continue with our day. We are sorry to hear that he was not fine, and wish him a speedy recovery.
Best wishes from the Vík Horse Adventure team

I had a tougher time than I expected here, just like some other reviewers. The tölt Icelandic trot was fast and I could not keep my feet in the stirrups and was unable to follow the guide’s instructions, so I ended up with a pulled muscle. And I also felt that the horse didn’t respond to instructions at all. I pulled on the reins both gently and hard but he basically ignored me and followed the others. I am a novice rider: so maybe I just did it wrong. But that part wasn’t very fun. Before the second faster segment of the ride I tried to tell the guides that I preferred to walk this time, but either they didn’t hear or they ignored me. They were all very nice so I really think they probably just didn’t hear. But I could have happily skipped the trot. I could easily have fallen and Vik is pretty remote.
The people were very nice and the horses seem well cared for and the beach is beautiful. Just remember that horseback riding is not easy and horses are big, and independent animals as the management says. Be prepared for a physical ride.

While not a long ride it was beautiful to ride on the amazing thick black sand. The horse were well trained for our variety of riding levels. I was able to expereince the unique gait called "Tolt" with my horse 'Glymur.
The guide Hilary was great. Explained many things clearly, interesting scenic information, info re the nature inthe area.

So much fun! Sanna was our guide and our horses were Eldhrimnir and Tindur. They have horses of various sizes and dispositions and do a very good job of matching horse with appropriate rider based on size and experience. The view was incredible, we got to try the tolt gait, got amazing pictures, and appreciated all the information and Icelandic horse history that the guides shared. Would absolutely recommend this to all horse enthusiasts and also people who want to make a great memory. My companion was a horse expert and I was a complete novice, and we both had a great time.

Tremendous experience for our teen girls!!! First off we had perfect weather with sunny skies and no wind. The ride included a dirt trail parallel to the beach and then a detour onto the black sand beach with a perfect picture opportunity with the Reynisfjara in the background. They returned to the trail with a trot and detoured to the stream bed where the horses walked along the stream crossing it twice before heading back to the stables. It was a fabulous 1 hour excursions and the highlight of my kid’s trip.

Lisa and Phillip were excellent guides. We had the cutest, sweetest, but spunky horses. I loved this adventure and would highly recommend going with Vik Horse Adventures. We asked to change our date and time because of the weather and they were more than accommodating. I am glad we chose to ride with them! We had a short tölt on the beach as the ice was pretty thick, but it was enough to see how much fun that gait is!

Great experience! The day I went happened to be a very windy and rainy day. No one's fault, that's Iceland for you. The guide said that the horses were used to it as Vík can be more rainy than other places, but that we would also be the last tour that day given the weather was so poor. However, decked out in my raincoat and expecting to be soaked by the end, I still had an awesome time. My horse was very sweet and we had a great ride along the beach. The guides stopped us to take photos with the famous rock formations in the background, and because it was so dreary and foggy, the photos actually looked pretty cool and ominous! My black horse against the black and hazy beach. Those who wanted got to jog on the way back and it was long enough to really get a feel for it. Prepare for any weather and this experience will be a great one!

Thank you for a lovely review! We're really happy to hear that you enjoyed the ride despite the rain; being prepared for any weather and enjoying it anyway is definitely the right mindset to have for outdoor activities in Vík :) Riding in the rain and wind is one of the best ways to experience how tough and hardy the Icelandic horses are - as well as being sweet and cuddly!

We visited for our second time thus year. I ride regularly, my fiance doesn't ride at all. Nonetheless both of us had a great, fun time on each visit. On both occasions I was able to try the tolt while my fiance stayed with the other instructor in walk and there were no issues. We each rode different horses on each visit and all were perfectly suitable to our riding standards, well cared for and friendly. Lisa and Sanna were our guides this year and were so nice, telling us about the business, their horses and other general chatter. Don't go expecting to take lots of selfies while you are riding as it's not safe, and therefore they (rightly so) ask riders not to.The guides will dismount to take a few pictures of the mounted riders standing on the beach. Overall two great experiences with lovely people. We hope to return soon! Highly recommend.

My girlfriend and I were staying in Vik and knew that the black sand beach was high on the list to see, but we stumbled across this riding tour and couldn't be happier we did. I'm not particularly into horses but I had a great time on a friendly horse named Kvika and my partner (who loves horses) was loving it as Icelandic horses are quite unique and have a special run that they can do.
Our guide Sanna was very friendly and clearly loves the horses and what she does. She helped me to feel at ease as a novice and gave my partner plenty of space. Would highly recommend putting this on your list!

I participated in this activity in early June when I was in Vík. This tour caters for everyone, me as a solo traveller doing the ring road, families and couples. I am an absolute beginner, never ridden a horse in my entire life, but that didn’t matter. Instructors Hilary and Deirdre are very experienced and knowledgeable and will give handy tips and instruction to help you control your horse. My horse, ‘Isak’ was a beautiful white Icelandic horse, and very well behaved other than the odd nibble on the grass to and from the black sand beach 😂 it was a very relaxing and chilled experience that I did in the early evening. It was a great way to end the day of sightseeing and exploring Iceland’s beauty. If you’re thinking about taking part in this horse riding experience on the black sand beach, do it! You won’t regret it.

We are planning a March 2029 trip. We will not have a car. What are our transportation options from Reykjavík?
Written 21 September 2019
Reykjavik is VERY walkable. You will not need to have a car to see most of the main sights within the city.
For places outside of the city, there are many bus tour options available, traveling on full-size or on smaller buses.
We did one day of sightseeing to Vik from Reykjavik using a car rental and another day we did a small group (18 people max) bus tour to see the Golden Circle. Both travel options were great!
