About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- cocoporter0 contributionsA delicious day touring Reykjavik with PalI love food, it gives me great joy, and I love trying new recipes. I also love visiting new places and learning about the history of the folk and their traditions and I also love a good storyteller. This tour checked all the boxes for me. The guide, Pal, a weathered fisherman, tall with white flowing locks, could play the part of Santa in a movie. Pal, was wonderful, a great storyteller, and loved his native Iceland, and its food. He kept us entertained and informed with great stories of his life as a fisherman, and the history of his beautiful town and brought us to the best eateries in town. I tried everything and I was blown away by the taste of it all. I even tried (and smelled - eeuuu!) the fermented shark, and as tradition goes, I chewed it twice, swallowed and washed it down with a shot of Snapps! Don't be scared, the stories are worst than its bite ;-)Written 7 October 2024
- lare580 contributionsFabulous tourVery entertaining tour. Our guide was so informative and shared some lovely family memories about Icelandic culture and history. We learned so much about Reykjavik and Iceland. I would highly recommend this tour.Written 6 October 2024

- stephenhP4285OY0 contributionsgreat sweet tooth tourWe went on the bakery/ candy tour. Our guide was Mathias and he was very good and laid back. We stopped by several places in the downtown area visiting bakeries, a Greek donut shop, ice cream shop, and a restaurant for cheesecake with skyr. We also visited a gift shop to sample different flavors of licorice. My husband and I were the only people on the tour and we had plenty of time for conversation with Mathias. We talked about the history of Iceland and everyday life there.Written 2 October 2024

- bestsZagreb0 contributionsvery interestingThe guide david made the tour very interesting and pleasant. we saw many landmarks of the city and heard the stories behind them. we also were lucky with the weather.Written 30 September 2024
- brucefi0 contributionsFun, informative tourA great way to get acquainted with the highlights of Reykjavik and the history of Iceland. Our guide, Arnar, was congenial, informative and entertaining. We learned a lot about the culture, government, natural resources, language, and "hidden ones" of Iceland. The tour gave us a fuller picture of this beautiful country.Written 29 September 2024
- Karen S0 contributionsExceptional Experience at the Foodie Walking tour. Our guide, Gardar, was amazing. We tasted delicious food and learned a lot about Icelandic history and culture along the way.Written 29 September 2024
- overloading0 contributionsStay away. Not a good experience. We did this at 4.00 pm yesterday 26th Sept. Our host obviously did not want to be there. Just seemed tired and bored and kept looking at his watch. Walked too fast for some people yet we seem to arrive too early. Had one hour at one place. We had to dig information out of him. Luckily we had some fun people in our group. It could have been an awful afternoon. Food was fine. Completely over priced. Better just to do your own thing.Written 27 September 2024
- maryem20180 contributionsDon't BotherI booked this tour based on the previous reviews (all seemed positive) as well as my curiosity of Icelandic Folklore. I was sorely disappointed as were my 2 friends. Stephan was our guide and spent very little time on elves and trolls and more time on zombies and the Yule lads. He just didn't seem interested or enthused. (maybe because the tour was at 5:30 pm and he had just come from a swimming pool ?) With such a rich literary history, surely he could have come up with a a few stories about elves and trolls. Walk was a complete waste of time and money! The next day we embarked on a 10 day tour of Iceland and that guide had numerous elf and troll stories to tell as we made our way around the Ring Road . Definitely made up for the Reykjavik Walking Tour.Written 26 September 2024
- 508karenh5080 contributionsGives a good basis of the cityVery informative tour, we didn't get to the church our guide got a little caught up in the history of the city. This was not a problem for us.Written 26 September 2024
- sas0sb0 contributionsAwesome private tour with EinarWe had an amazing tour with Einar, so knowledgeable and easy to get along with. We got to see Reykjavik but also learned the history behind it. The highlight was when we visited a church and Einar was talking about a particular hymn and then actually sung it, beautiful voice. Really enjoyed.Written 24 September 2024
- GRiih0 contributionsGreat introduction to Iceland! We did this walking tour on our first day in Reykjavik. It was a great way to get oriented to the city. We learned a ton about Iceland. Our guide Stefan I. was entertaining and very informative. We learned about everything from politics, local beer and elves!Written 23 September 2024
- sas0sb0 contributionsAwesome visit to Iceland thanks to AronWe had a Aron as a private for chauffeur for several days, including this and the Northern Lights. Aron was incredible, highly recommend you ask for him. Tours were amazing and we felt we really got to experience Iceland thanks to him. We had a couple of questions and company was always quick to reply and very easy to work with.Written 23 September 2024

We were two couples who arranged a private food tour, for just the four of us, through this company. We had specific food restrictions which we told them in advance. These were: no shellfish and no pork. When we started the tour we checked with the guide and she knew about these restrictions.
During the tour she took us to a lobster restaurant, where they served us lobster ( shellfish) soup. She said “ they forgot”.
She then told us that were were going to a famous hot dog stand, which served hot dogs that were lamb and pork. Even though we asked her to take us someplace else, she took us there anyway “ to see it” and we stood there awkwardly and did not eat the hot dogs.
She had no alternate places that we could go and sample food that we could eat.
Since we had arranged for this tour as a private tour, and paid around $300 USD per person for the tour, and told them in advance about our food restrictions, we felt that this was highly unacceptable. Reykjavik has many fine restaurants and there certainly could have been accommodations made for us. If that was not a possibility, then this company should have declined to book our tour.
I wrote to the company, privately, about this when we returned home, since they asked for a review. I told them that I would not publish it immediately, but rather wait for their comments.
After two weeks, I have not received a comment back from them.
So, this is my review: this company charges a lot for a private food tour and obviously does not care what you will or will not be able to eat and how that affects your experience.

Hi Glenn
We would love to know when you attended our food tour so we can look into the matter. We have had many guests who have some kind of dietary restrictions without any problems so it would be great to understand what went wrong this time. As you say in your review, the guide knew but what we don't understand is that she did not offer the alternatives that we have available on our food tour.
All I can think off at the moment is an inexperienced guide who did not know how to adjust the tour but of course that is completely on us.
Please reach out directly if you can so I can take a look at this tour: valur@yourfriendinreykjavik.com

Enjoyed the food tour, the history of Reykjavik’s food and culture. The selections of food/restaurants were great. I particularly liked the Seabarron’s place for its good food and the story behind the dummy of the original owner, with his watchful eyes starting at you. Esther, my tour guide, was very knowledgeable, courteous and very resourceful. I would recommend this tour to interested in learning all of the above without the hassle of dealing with a large group.

My husband and I had a wonderful time on the walking food tour today. We experienced many of Iceland’s favorite dishes as well as learned a lot about them and their history from our guide, Stefan. And speaking of our guide, he absolutely made this tour most enjoyable. He is funny, personable, very knowledgeable, and clearly enjoys what he does. Thank you for sharing the best country and the best food and beer in the world with us! Top notch in every way!

I had expected the usual food walking tour with several tiny tastings however, this tour was so much better. Our guide Tinna was charming, sweet and knowledgeable !
These were not just tiny one bite samples they added up to be quite substantial !. we did not need to eat again in the evening. The food tastings were very interesting and by and large very tasty. a real pleasant surprise. it represented great value. seems very expensive when booking but ended up being good value for the price we paid.
Thoroughly recommended !!

We booked this private food tour for our second day in Iceland and it was a perfect way to start our vacation, as well as one of the highlights of our whole trip. We knew our way around Reykjavik right after. Our guide Bardi took us to great places to taste traditional Icelandic dishes, and since it was a weekend he also took us to the flea market. We also followed his recommendations for other stuff during our trip and they turned out awesome. We later wished we had Bardi as a guide for other tours we took. Bardi was truly our first friend in Reykjavik!

We had an absolutely fantastic food tour with Daniel. He did an amazing job of keeping us well informed and entertained, and obviously well fed. He was so knowledgeable about food, Icelandic history and politics, and about any other question we threw at him. It was impressive that he could keep my husband and I AND our 3 kids fully engaged. The food was great (maybe I should find a different description for the fermented shark though) and we enjoyed hearing stories to go with each course. I cannot recommend this food tour enough! Doing the private option helped keep it catered more to our needs. Daniel even took us into the market to answer my questions about licorice 😆 Thank you!!
