About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- I2328OWjoshh0 contributionsGreat history tour!Such a great tour to do while in Iceland! Our tour guide Ester E. was very knowledgable and very funny! Had a lot of historical knowledge of the settlement of Reykjavik and Iceland as well. One stop I enjoyed was at the city hall building where there was a topographical map of Iceland and she was able to explain with detail the formation and geographic obstacles that are involved with living in Iceland. A must do tour!Written 14 October 2024
- jacquelinesH8492CF0 contributionsWalking and talkingGuide was very knowledgeable about Nordic/Icelandic folklore. I loved listening to his stories. It was a little cool walking but we enjoyed the walk. I would recommend this tour.Written 11 October 2024
- seniorg1010 contributionsA walk with a VikingOur guide was well informed and knowledgable about the culture and history of Reykjavik. Unfortunately we had to leave the tour after a couple of hours due to another commitment.Written 10 October 2024
- MaryNormal0 contributionsGreat Walking TourGreat information about the history and culture of Iceland and Reykjavik. Our guide, Help, kept us interested and informed. Would recommend this as a great introduction to Iceland if it is your first time there.Written 9 October 2024
- CathyD22370 contributionsPurrfect tourOur tour guide Bardi was the best. We had a lovely stroll through downtown Reykjavik where we were introduced to the Shop cats. The Cat Cafe was the high point of the tour. For once, I wasn't the only one stopping to get photos of the cats.Written 8 October 2024
- X9013UMkristenr0 contributionsJust the two of us and our guideLearned a lot about some local legends. Our guide was friendly but also maybe a bit rushed and put off by questions. Overall we had a nice time and he warmed up to us as it went on.Written 8 October 2024
- 362sharie0 contributionsExcellentVery insighful experience. Einar was articulate and had a great sense of humor. It was very thoughtful of him to send a photo log following the tour so we have a pictorial memory. The tastings were plentiful and included some "interesting" morsels. Highly recommend this tour.Written 8 October 2024
- 682warwickd0 contributionsExcellent, informative and includes singingAn excellent tour by Einar Steinn Valgarðsson and I will return to go on another tour. The tour was relaxed and very informative, many things you would never read in a book or guide were included. Einar made it very comfortable and personal and wow has he got a great voice (come on the tour just for that).Written 8 October 2024
- P821LCchristined0 contributionsAwesome experience! Our guide was awesome! We learned about cats but so so much more about iceland, it's history, and modern practices. I highly recommend this tour!Written 8 October 2024
- Mandinkadell0 contributionsSuper informative and fun!!!We ended up taking 2 tours with Your Friend In Reykjavik on our recent trip. Our first trip was a drinking/Beer tour and our guide was Helgi. Helgi was so amazing and accommodating. He took us to the different bar locations, but catered the samplings of beers to our likings. We met a few locals, as well, as Helgi is just so personable and easy for anyone to strike up a conversation with. Helgi had a lot of interesting stories about history, but also about the recent history of Reykjavik as he has lived there his entire life. Our second tour was the Walking with a Viking Tour and our guide was Einar. Einar is a great storyteller and this tour was very informative. There was someone in the group that had mobility issues and Einar made sure to tell this person ahead of time exactly what was coming up at each turn and even slowed down to be sure this person was included in all conversations and stories. I would highly suggest both of these tours and would highly suggest both of these guides for your visit to Reykjavik!Written 7 October 2024
- lare580 contributionsFabulous tourVery entertaining tour. Our guide was so informative and shared some lovely family memories about Icelandic culture and history. We learned so much about Reykjavik and Iceland. I would highly recommend this tour.Written 6 October 2024
- stephenhP4285OY0 contributionsgreat sweet tooth tourWe went on the bakery/ candy tour. Our guide was Mathias and he was very good and laid back. We stopped by several places in the downtown area visiting bakeries, a Greek donut shop, ice cream shop, and a restaurant for cheesecake with skyr. We also visited a gift shop to sample different flavors of licorice. My husband and I were the only people on the tour and we had plenty of time for conversation with Mathias. We talked about the history of Iceland and everyday life there.Written 2 October 2024
- J6380NLchristinaf0 contributionsAn amazing start to our trip!We had the best tour with Einar! He was very fun and super knowledgeable! We had a lot of laughs and he gave us so many recommendations for restaurants, bars, and Icelandic music to try out. 10/10 an amazing start to our trip!!Written 2 October 2024

The food and restaurant selections were disappointing. One of the four stop was the "famous" hot dog stand for a hot dog. The last restaurant was out of one of the components of the tasting, and the first served the wrong item. The 10 items mentioned in the description must have included each individual bite.
The guide was uninspired and wasn't able to answer questions about Icelandic beer.
While some of the issues may have been a bad day, the hot dog was an absurd inclusion in the itinerary.

This tour is a must if you want to sample the variety of foods Iceland has to offer in one quick trip.
If you read all the reviews, yeah, they're small appetizer sized...but you're going to multiple destinations. If you had 4 or 5 full course meals, you wouldn't even be able to walk afterwards. The pacing of the tour is fine as you're not rushed through any destination, and our guide Bardi was very personable and at no time did he seem disinterested in any of our questions.
Also, one plus about this tour company, they sent a nice e-mail with various suggestions, which turns out we wound up going to a couple. So, their engagement with the customer after the end of the tour makes them a company you'd want to look at.

I went on the food tour with the two most amazing guides Hanna and Tina. They were both so friendly, funny and full of life which made the tour that much more enjoyable.
We walked to a few different food places in the city, stopping by at different areas for some cool facts and inside info!
We tried traditional Icelandic food and the famous hotdog ‘with everything on it’.
It was a small group of people which gave us plenty of time to talk about the food and for Hanna and Tina to share stories with us as we ate. They recommended places to visit around Iceland and very useful info for our stay.
If you’re considering a food tour then THIS IS THE ONE! Absolutely worth it and I would definitely recommend this to all my friends and family!

Ester E was a fun guide for our walking tour of Icelandic food in Reykjavik. She convinced all (well, most) of us to try the grilled whale as well as the marinated shark. She was right on point as the whale was delicious (sea beef). The shark, well, it wasn’t as nasty as she warned us. But the whole experience was a joy. Highly recommend for first time visitors to Reykjavik.

Overall a very nice tour
PROS
* Excellent variety of food. We had some new Icelandic favorites along with some traditional foods. Everything was very authentically Icelandic.
* Very knowledgeable tour guide. She knew her way around the city. She stopped at a few points of interest along the way and gave us some additional knowledge, and was very friendly with a good sense of humor.
* Plenty of space in restaurants. My husband and I have been on several food tours, and often times you are crammed into a space that doesn't really fit the group well. We did not have this problem at all. It was quite refreshing to see restaurants providing ample space to sit and enjoy
* Plenty of time was allotted for each stop. The entire food tour was several hours long, and we had plenty of time to enjoy food at each stop, ask questions, and socialize.
CONS
* The starting location seemed quite random. We started in an area full of restaurants, yet the first restaurant we stopped at was a 10 minute walk away from the starting point
* It was quite a lot of walking. While it was nice to see so much of the city, it was a very cold day and would have been nice to know we were going to cover such a large area on foot

We did the Food Lovers tour our first night in Iceland and it was a great introduction to the city, the people and the culture. Our guide was Iris and one of our favorite things about the tour were her stories of the places we visited from the perspective of someone who had grown up there. The food was delicious and plentiful and Iris enhanced our experience with cooking tips and family traditions surrounding the food we were eating. The tour was also a great orientation to the city and Iris provided many suggestions for things we could do with our remaining days in Reykjavik. She is also an opera singer and we encouraged her to write a song about the wonderful Icelandic hot dog which we expect to hear on a future visit! This was the perfect tour to begin our Iceland experience.

After meeting at a convenient town square in the center of the city, our small group of 8 sampled a variety of foods at different locations within a comfortable walking distance from one another over the course of nearly three hours. Educational, fun and delicious. The tour helped us get our bearings for further explorations on our own. Our young knowledgeable guide made it a memorable time. An unexpected bonus was receiving some photos and recipes afterwards.

A lovely, small and personal tour. Our guide shared lots of information about Reykjavik, Iceland and local restaurants. When she found out everyone on the tour liked cats, she took us to a shop with a resident cat and told us Icelandic cat lore. We learned a lot, food tours are such a great introduction to a city and it's history.

We took the food tour on our very first day in Iceland, which turned out to be a great way to be introduced to Icelandic food and culture from the start. Bardi was a wonderful guide, teaching us not only about Icelandic food, including his own experiences with the food growing up, but also Icelandic history as well. The food was a nice mix of traditional foods that were delicious, like plockfish and lamb stew, and traditional foods that we probably would not have had otherwise, like fermented shark. We used the discount code in our Rick Steves guide to get a small discount on the price of the tour.

We had this tour on our first day in Reykjavik. Our guide Printiss was amazing. She walked us through some of the major highlights in the city and talked about Reykjaviks and Icelands history as well as a little folklore. It gave us a great intro to our vacation in the land of ice and fire and insight into their culture, politics and way of life. Some of the stops were interests points that we later came back to to get the full experience. If it hadnt been for the tour's introduction we wouldnt have ventured so much into the city on our own. We loved it and cannot recommend it enough.

Honestly. not a vegetarian friendly selection here, as it is tasting of specific local fare and traditional Icelandic delicacies; mostly seafood and lamb.

Hello. I'm a total foodie, but I don't eat red meat (beef/lamb), pork, or shellfish. This may be a disadvantage in Iceland, and I can always just skip those parts. My question is... is it possible to have alternatives for people with food sensitivities, or would that guest just not eat at that stop?
Written 21 September 2021
I cant answer your question about alternatives, but here is a list of what we had. These may not be the same options on every tour, but just an example of the stops:
Stop 1:
-lobster soup
-whale steak
Stop 2:
-hot dog
Stop 3:
-lamb stew
-smoked lamb
Stop 4:
-plokkfiskur
-fermented shark
-smoked arctic char
-"crepe"
-rye bread ice cream

We have eaten so much!
if I remember correctly, 7 dishes and 1 drink:
Maquareux, lamb soup, fish and chips, hot dog, shark, whale, lobster soup and skir!
Sometimes a complete dish sometimes just tasting, but all very rich and representative of their specialties
we ate well and enjoyed the little tour of the center with the guide, with whom we could discuss the whole evening
Enjoy!
