Before setting off on the Northern Lights tour, our specialists and guides make a decision of where the best possible chances to see the lights are. That means that there is no fixed location visited, and the destination is selected on a day-to-day basis. We can say with certainty that the Aurora Borealis is one of the most unique spectacles that life on Earth has to offer. That is why we make every effort to provide an unforgettable Northern Lights experience to our passengers with daily tours, supervised by our expert guides. After operating Northern Lights hunting tours for many years, we know a thing or two about finding the best possible viewing conditions. Before each tour, we study the weather forecasts to help us decide what the best location that night will be. If the conditions are right, you may be lucky enough to see the Northern Lights swirling in a wild and carefree dance across the heavens, painting dramatic shapes, colors and patterns on the night sky.

We saw the lights the first night!!
It was great and very exciting. I was glad we were able to see the northern lights on our first night. We had several people on the bus that have been out on other days and different tours and had not seen them. We were nervous at first because that was one of the main reasons we came out here, but thankfully we had a wonderful experience and saw the lights our first night. It was like mission accomplish on the first night, now we can relax the rest of our days in Iceland. We enjoyed grayline tours and believed they did very good on hunting for the lights as well as telling us about Iceland, and the fact of guaranteeing you another attempt in case you miss the lights is very nice of them. Great night! Wonderful experience!

Disappointing
Mar 2020 • Couples
We were collected from the hotel promptly and taken to their depo. We were driven to a car park area with 7 other buses where we all got out. Waited half an hour then got in and were taken to a road side bus stop for 20 minutes. Then taken back to the car park for another hour. We vaguely saw the lights behind clouds but was nothing to saw they were seen. What was most frustrating was for a mystery tour all we did in essence was stand in a car park with 7 other bus fulls of people.

Thank you Lou N for your feedback. It is always a disappointment when the Northern Lights are not seen in good strength on any given night. When this happens we invite all our passengers to repeat the tour. The main idea is to go out on a dark night, find a good spot away from city lights where our passengers can stand outdoors safely. The Northern Lights are after all a natural occurrence that can never be guaranteed. I hope that you can join us again

Gray Line's Customer Service
Mar 2020
The customer service I have received from Gray Line has been absolutely fantastic. We had windy tours, cancelled tours and a northern lights tour that lacked the lights, but none of this can be helped at all. Gray Line have really excelled in customer service and organisation. I would certainly use this company again for tours. Thank you Gray Line.

Didnt see the lights but they let you go until you do.
Mar 2020 • Friends
So with the lights being a force of nature its normal to expect not to see them.

Getting picked up us simple, there are 5 meeting spots for to get picked up at and the bus takes you where they think the best place to see the lights is.

All in all didnt get to see the lights but thats a problem with nature and not the bus company

Northern lights
Mar 2020 • Family
The whole point of getting On a coach at night, driving for an hour into the middle of nowhere, standing in biting wind and sub zero temperature for an hour was obviously in order to see the magnificent, natural phenomena which is the Northern lights - which sadly didn't appear for us. If I'd have done my homework I'd have known the chance of seeing the lights in winter is 28% as opposed to 87% in summer. We gave it a good go as we stayed in the area for two hours, though most people were back on the coach long before this due to the cold. We had a friendly guide and efficient pick up and drop off arrangements. You get to go another night free of charge if the lights don't appear but frankly we couldn't face a second time. Would like to try again but in summer next time. One caveat was thrown in - we got to see Venus shining brightly in the clear, night sky!

Terrible never again
Feb 2020 • Couples
I don’t even know what the worst part was, the tour guide spoke about herself the full journey there and back! We wanted to learn a bit about the lights and all we got was chat about restaurants that have closed. We eventually got dropped at a carpark surrounded by lights and then about ten more busloads got dropped off with all their full beam headlights on you couldn’t see a thing! It was so cloudy and we were told the driver would move on which he didn’t! Left freezing with no services no cafe and to top it off the tour guide was nowhere to be seen. We didn’t know how long the bus would stay it was so busy it was just awful. I have requested a refund we paid over £100 for two people and Grayline have failed to respond to my complaint about the false advertising and tour guide. I would never recommend or use this company again it’s terrible they can take your money and treat customers like this with absolutely no apologies. Offering unhappy customers due to customer service another “free trip” is very poor.

hank you AmyGalby for writing your review. It is regrettable that you were disappointed with the tour of the Northern Lights. I have spoken to our guide and her supervisor and she has worked for us for a long time, she explained her side which is very different from what you have said. Rest assured that we take any complaint against our staff very seriously. The tour of the Northern lights is not like any of our tours, we go out to a location where our passengers can stand outside on safe ground and simply wait for the lights to appear, unfortunately this does not always happen although we are very lucky to see this phenomenon over our country frequently. The guides will speak about the lights and our guide has assured me that she did and as the drive may be long to any given location, the guides are at liberty to speak about other subjects and our guide having been in Iceland as an expatriate has some stories to tell from the aspect of a foreigners that many of our visitors can relate to. It is unfortunate that you did not like her story. The location for viewing the lights is selected depending on the cloud cover each night. The guides will be available whenever needed and take turns being outside with the passengers. The guides are very approachable and would answer any questions when asked. I can understand your disappointment when not seeing the Northern Lights and your experience would have been different if you had. The tour is carried out in the same way each night but those disappointed seem not to understand that the lights are a natural phenomenon and cannot be guaranteed. All aspects of the tour then becomes annoying and unacceptable. You must also read the terms and conditions of the tour that you have booked where it is clearly explained that when the Northern Lights are not seen a repeat of the tour is available to all and the tickets are valid for 2 years. I do hope that you will reconsider and join us again

No Lights, but Lots of Stars and a Cool Beach in the Dark
Feb 2020
Unfortunately, we didn't see any lights. However, we saw a bunch of stars and constellations, which were breathtaking. It was my first time looking at a night sky filled with THAT many stars. There was also a beach near the gathering point the coach buses brought us to and although we didn't go into the water (it was too dark to see), just hearing the waves while watching the stars was a great experience. It was pretty cold and windy, though, so make sure you move around and keep yourself warm.

Glimpsed the Lights!
Feb 2020 • Friends
So this tour was already booked as part of our holiday package...originally we were booked to go on the sunday night but this was changed to the saturday night ...the week before we received an e mail. We assume this was because there was a better chance of seeing them that night. Fortunately we hadn't booked any other trips as the other game of thrones tour booked with the same operator was changed too.
We were picked up on time at the bus stop outside our hotel in a smaller bus and as is the norm taken to the depot to transfer to a larger coach.
The guide was very friendly and informative telling us about the lights and pointing out things of interest as we drove plus giving us information about iceland. We went to a spot in the national park where there was only one house and some loos. Obviously a place the tour operator use regularly. There were 3 coaches including us when we arrived. Be prepared wrap up well as we were there about 1.5 to 2 hours. In freezing snow and darkness. Lots of patience required.
Initially nothing then we saw what looked like a band of cloud building up across the sky which then disappeared. Above us there was what looked like a clump of stars which one of the guides said was the northern lights too.It was pretty cloudy and our guide had told us that the chance of seeing them was 3 out of 9 so we were a little disappointed!
Some intermittent patches of what we thought was cloud appeared in the sky and eventually they made an appearance. Very pale green and both horizontal and vertical patches. Super we saw them! Unfortunately not in all their glory they weren't bright green like you see in the photos! We did though have an added bonus of seeing a shooting star drop from the sky ...but missed getting a photo of it!
Whilst being a little under-whelmed with the sight we were glad at least to see them as we knew it is not always possible given all the factors including weather.
Before we left more coaches arrived and I'm not sure they were as lucky!?
The good thing with grayline is your ticket remains valid for 2 years so you can try and see them again! I'm not sure if you would be able to re-book though immediately. Ideally I would say if you are on a short break try and go the first night in case you need to go again. But at the same time there is no guarantee and trips can be cancelled due to poor weather. With hindsight we wondered whether it would have been better to go earlier in the winter ...who knows!?
Only downside was queuing for one loo. Journey back was fine.
Overall an enjoyable successful evening given the poor weather conditions. The guide said they weren't expecting that much cloud ...so the gods were with us !
