Before setting off on the Northern Lights tour, our specialists and guides make a decision of where the best possible chances to see the lights are. That means that there is no fixed location visited, and the destination is selected on a day-to-day basis. We can say with certainty that the Aurora Borealis is one of the most unique spectacles that life on Earth has to offer. That is why we make every effort to provide an unforgettable Northern Lights experience to our passengers with daily tours, supervised by our expert guides. After operating Northern Lights hunting tours for many years, we know a thing or two about finding the best possible viewing conditions. Before each tour, we study the weather forecasts to help us decide what the best location that night will be. If the conditions are right, you may be lucky enough to see the Northern Lights swirling in a wild and carefree dance across the heavens, painting dramatic shapes, colors and patterns on the night sky.

The first night we were unlucky and did not see the lights, the forecast was too cloudy. We arrived at Thingvellir and was told to go wonder around a horseshoe but to look out for the bus in case we have to leave. There was no direction and no one knew where to go or what to look for. We were then taken to a random road about an hours drive from Thingvellir and had to stand on the side of the road in pitch black to try see them. When at this road our female guide set up a tripod and managed to get some sort of activity, nothing at all visible to the eye but one of the other male guides said 'mission accomplished' and directed everyone back to their buses.

We had a female tour guide who was not the best to be honest and it felt like the experience was more for her than anyone else. She even expressed how disappointed she didn't see them, no mention of the people who had traveled to Iceland to see them! I think she spoke more about the cat in Reykjavik centre than she did the lights!

The first trip was very disappointing.

We were also collected from our hotel area at the start of the tour but at the end dropped at the standard bus stop so had to make our way back at 1am with no idea where to go. I wouldn't recommend paying for the extra pick up due to this.

As the Northern Lights were not visible we assumed they would contact us to rearrange but they never so we contacting them and thankfully managed to rearrange.

The second evening started off bumpy as the tour guide we had was super rude and would not allow us to sit at the front of the bus despite requesting this due to motion sickness.

We were a bit annoyed about this and thought oh here we go again another crap night on this tour.

We couldn't have been more wrong. The guide ended up being amazing, telling us exactly where to go and where to look. We felt very safe with him and knew he had everyone's best interests at heart and not just his like our previous guide. He even took a photo of us and got the lights perfectly in the background. Thankfully we saw them near enough straight away so had no waiting around in the cold.

Overall would recommend a Northern Lights tour but it would be a risk booking with Grey Line.

I was lucky enough to see a little bit of the Northern Light. Just a little over an hour before the tour started, it was cloudy and snowing and I was almost sure there was a slim chance of seeing the Northern Lights.

You have an option to get picked up from your hotel for an additional price or pick-up from 5 available pick-up points. During the bus ride, the tour guide gave a lecture on the Northern Light phenomenon. Although it was dry and monotone, it was informative. They company had told us we can come back within the next 2 years to get a better sighting of the Northern Lights. Overall, it was decently organized.

Our original trip was cancelled due to weather so we rebooked for the following day. Darren our guide was excellent, explained all about the lights, what to expect and that there was a chance we may not see them. We arrived at the national park and it started to snow so everyone got back on the bus but as soon as there was some activity, we were told straight away. We had about 20 mins worth of light activity before it clouded over and after an hour, we left. Only gave 4* as return driving felt a bit rushed to drop everyone off.

Only in the winter when you can see northern lights in Iceland, that’s what we were told by the guide, from November to February is guarantee to see it. We got there in nowhere outside the city by bus 45 minutes out of Reykjavik arriving at 11:30 pm with temperature at -7 Celsius. By the time we started to see northern light was near 1:00 am and temperature dropped to -11 Celsius!!!! It was worth the trip too see. Brace for the winter gear!!!! Brrrrrrrrr.

We went with Grayline for the Northern Lights tour on 13th January and unfortunately we were really disappointed.
We originally booked for 11th January but this was cancelled due to bad weather conditions which was completely understandable so we booked again for 12th January, again this was cancelled due to weather conditions.
We finally got to go out in 13th January and unfortunately the lights were no where to be seen which is totally out of the control of anyone. We were fully prepared to not see them due to clouds and the forecast on the Aurora app.
However, despite the tour guide trying to lift the mood, it was a very disappointing trip. Not only due to not seeing the lights, but the location we went to was extremely busy with a lack of facilities for toilets and generally it felt very unorganised. We only visited one location near a church which was extremely cloudy, yet the Aurora app noted a better location 20 minutes away. We couldn’t help but feel we were being scammed and not being taken to an actual good spot to see the lights.
We were then just dropped off in the city centre at 12am when all of the buses had stopped.. meaning we had to fork out for a taxi!
Additionally, we have been told we cannot have a full or even partial refund and we only have the opportunity to visit again within 2 years… which we probably wouldn’t revisit due to completing all attractions on this trip!
There was also a lot of uncertainty and waiting around has also taken time away from our trip to Iceland, having to plan around the tour going ahead/being cancelled last minute.
We are extremely disappointed but cannot wholly blame the company, we just wish it was handled better as it has left us with a real negative experience of Grayline.

Thank you 380charleyn for posting your review in order to give us an opportunity to explain. The tour of the Northern Lights is not like any other tour that the outcome can be a disappointment if the lights are not seen. This of course is due to the fact that the Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon that cannot be guaranteed to appear on any given night. A location is selected with the minimum cloud cover and even though the "Aurora app" indicated good forecast, the location would probably be clouded over and we would certainly move to this area if it was clear of clouds. Our staff would of course explain what is involved and also that if you do not see the lights on tour you are welcome to join us again free of charge and if you are leaving Iceland the complimentary tickets are valid for 2 years and I certainly hope that you will return and join us once more

Our northern lights tour got cancelled 2x however on the third night the tour was on despite it being exceptionally cloudy.

At the start of the tour you had clearly overbooked and had to find somewhere for the extra people to go delaying the tour by about half an hour. We then set off for about a 1.5 hour drive to a car park where we were told to get off and look up at the sky. The guide told us nothing else we were just following the crowd. After standing there for about 20 mins we were told to quickly get back on the bus (no idea why) and drove for another hour (no one had any idea where they were going) then the tour guide made an announcement that we were in Reykjavik and couldn’t see the lights as it was too cloudy so we’re going to be dropped off.

The tour guide couldn’t barely speak English so we didn’t know what was going on and learnt nothing about the lights or history ect.

It felt like the tour was just put on to take peoples money despite you knowing there was no chance of seeing them. The tour guide didn’t even try to see the lights, we drove to one spot then went back. It’s a waste of £36 and I would like a full refund. I understand that you cannot help the weather however the tour should not of gone ahead and it should have been more organised and engaging.

Thank you Dav123456789 for writing your review. It is truly unfortunate that the Northern Lights were not seen on tour when you participated. Our staff will always arrange between them how they carry out the excursion each night and where to, very sorry that more explanations were not given. This phenomenon is never guaranteed and we offer our passengers to repeat the tour whenever the lights are not seen on any given night. The tickets are further valid for 2 years if you have already left Iceland this visit. I do hope that you can visit us again and join our tour.

Very disappointing trip from Greyline.

Unfortunately, I didn’t review this company or trip before our trip, as it seemed reputable enough. It turns out they aren’t and we had a very similar experience to many others on here.

Although we appreciate that there is no guarantee of seeing The Northern Lights, The Northern Lights Mystery Tour did not fulfil our expectations in the slightest.

We drove a significant number of hours to be dropped off in a field, where there was light pollution and it was obvious that it was going to be too cloudy to see the lights. We expected to be driven around to try and find sightings, however, no attempt was made to move us to another area, where they were indeed visible. This was not as per the tour description, nor what we expected from this trip.

Instead we were taken to a service station style cafe in the middle of a field, where we stayed inside pretty much all evening having to buy our own food and drinks to keep warm, with about 6 bus loads of other people. Why is there no glass building you can observe the lights from?

Once back from our trip, I contacted the Greyline’s Customer Service Manager, someone who it turns out does not know the meaning of ‘Customer Service’. Considering he was in charge of all of Greyline’s Customer Service, I was very disappointed in his customer service skills. He showed no empathy or remorse for our experience, nor did he apologise.

I booked this trip along with 3 other Greyline trips for myself and 4 other s in my party, spending a considerable amount of money with them. We all were completely disappointed in the trip they provided us with and felt extremely let down in the lack of acknowledgment of this, nor any real apologies from Greyline, who certainly did not understood our disappointment. This is unsatisfactory.

I certainly do not recommend Grayline to anyone and actively discourage future visitors to Iceland from using them.

I don’t even know what the worst part was, the tour guide spoke about herself the full journey there and back! We wanted to learn a bit about the lights and all we got was chat about restaurants that have closed. We eventually got dropped at a carpark surrounded by lights and then about ten more busloads got dropped off with all their full beam headlights on you couldn’t see a thing! It was so cloudy and we were told the driver would move on which he didn’t! Left freezing with no services no cafe and to top it off the tour guide was nowhere to be seen. We didn’t know how long the bus would stay it was so busy it was just awful. I have requested a refund we paid over £100 for two people and Grayline have failed to respond to my complaint about the false advertising and tour guide. I would never recommend or use this company again it’s terrible they can take your money and treat customers like this with absolutely no apologies. Offering unhappy customers due to customer service another “free trip” is very poor.

hank you AmyGalby for writing your review. It is regrettable that you were disappointed with the tour of the Northern Lights. I have spoken to our guide and her supervisor and she has worked for us for a long time, she explained her side which is very different from what you have said. Rest assured that we take any complaint against our staff very seriously. The tour of the Northern lights is not like any of our tours, we go out to a location where our passengers can stand outside on safe ground and simply wait for the lights to appear, unfortunately this does not always happen although we are very lucky to see this phenomenon over our country frequently. The guides will speak about the lights and our guide has assured me that she did and as the drive may be long to any given location, the guides are at liberty to speak about other subjects and our guide having been in Iceland as an expatriate has some stories to tell from the aspect of a foreigners that many of our visitors can relate to. It is unfortunate that you did not like her story. The location for viewing the lights is selected depending on the cloud cover each night. The guides will be available whenever needed and take turns being outside with the passengers. The guides are very approachable and would answer any questions when asked. I can understand your disappointment when not seeing the Northern Lights and your experience would have been different if you had. The tour is carried out in the same way each night but those disappointed seem not to understand that the lights are a natural phenomenon and cannot be guaranteed. All aspects of the tour then becomes annoying and unacceptable. You must also read the terms and conditions of the tour that you have booked where it is clearly explained that when the Northern Lights are not seen a repeat of the tour is available to all and the tickets are valid for 2 years. I do hope that you will reconsider and join us again

The tour guide, Darren and female driver were hilarious and very informative throughout the tour. The managed our expectations and ensured we had a great time. Even when it looked like we were not going to see the lights they remained positive and then when they finally made an appearance they stopped missing way home, at the side of the road and made sure everyone seen the lights and had a great time. Highly recommended

Thank you jredo1 for writing your review of our tour of the Northern Lights. So glad you enjoyed the excursion and the lights finally made their appearance which of course is never guaranteed on any given night. Our female driver was Signy and of course guide Darren, both excellent at their jobs. Your feedback is very much appreciated and I will make sure our staff will read your compliments

The tour operator we used (grayline) were poor communicators. We had to contact them to confirm pick up as their confirmation email was devoid of any useful detail. The location they told us over the phone was inaccurate and we had to take a taxi to ensure we made our trip.

Once we left the city the tour guide promptly informed us that it was unlikely we would see the northern lights that it has been a poor season for viewing.

Basically tourists take a tour bus for one hour at night on icey roads to a roadside eatery. The tour bus parks up and tourists stand around for 2-4 hours awaiting the lights. Tourists intermittently file in and out of the over priced cafe, then they go home. The tour guide informed us on the way home that we could go on another trip free of charge in the next 2 years. How many people really do this though?

While I understand seeing the northern lights are hit and miss. I'm not sure I'd recommend replicating our experience.

Thank you Eimear O for your feedback . When receiving bookings we make sure that the location for collecting passengers is correct and for this we need our customers to let us know. It is regrettable that miscommunication happened and you had extra expense to join us. it is truly unfortunate that you were not able to see the Northern Lights on tour. The Northern Lights are after all a natural phenomenon that we are lucky to see frequently in Iceland. Whenever the lights are not seen we offer all our passengers to repeat the tour free of charge while i Iceland and if having to leave the tickets are still valid for 2 years. We hope that you can visit us again and yes, we do receive many of our customers again and they are certainly welcome to join us again.
