Terrific tour!
Jun 2019
We did this tour in June 2019, and had Giorgos Bobbalis as our guide. He was the most interesting and informative guide, and brought the whole area alive for us, with all sorts of depth to the history he revealed for us. Thank you - we couldn't have hoped for a better introduction to the area!

Excellent tour of Old Town and Acropolis.
Sep 2019
The trip is split into 2 parts. We began with a tour of the Old Town with our guide Georgos. He provided great insight into the neighbourhoods we toured. We then were led by Vassiliki through the Acropolis up to the Parthenon. Very informative. A great way to spend time in Athens.

Excellent Introduction to Athens - the Acropolis & Plaka
Jul 2018 • Family
There are so many things to see and do around Athens, and especially if you're staying near the Acropolis, exploring the ancient and intricate alleys of the Plaka district and Monastiraki market area is best done on foot, but can be a challenge knowing where to start. For our group of 8 (ranging from 12 to 60 y.o.), in the peak tourist time of year, this walking tour was an ideal introduction and well worth the money. The walk starts in the morning at a convenient yogurt shop near the base of the Acropolis. I unfortunately did not make note of our guide's name (possibly Aristotle?). He was a trained archeologist and a very amusing and engaging speaker, with excellent english (seen in accompanying photos).

There were several stops on the leisurely walk up the Acropolis mountain. The "skip-the-line" aspect of this tour should not be underestimated, especially during high tourist season. It is hard to imagine how much longer we would have waited in the throngs of people clambering to get onto the summit. The descriptions and graphics provided to illustrate the architectural perceptions, history and restoration efforts of the Parthenon and associated buildings added immeasurably to our appreciation of one of the most important historical sites on earth.

This tour is available in two parts and can end after the Acropolis, but I highly recommend the second part. Our guide continued through interesting areas of the Plaka district, ancient churches, the secluded and unique Anafiotica neighborhood, graffiti areas, and finished in the Monastiraki market. In addition to architectural and historical background, we were enlightened about current cultural expectations, cautions to consider and recommended restaurants for the remainder of our visit to this fascinating, beautiful region and its friendly inhabitants.

Thank you very much for your lovely and detailed comment! Aristotle is indeed a great guide and person and a trained archaeologist as most of our local licensed guides. We are glad that you enjoyed your tour since we work to offer you the ultimate experience. It is true that during the high season the lines can get really long, so the free skip-the-line service we provide to our guests is quite convenient! Would love to host you in one of other tours soon!

Fascinating Trip

Annie was a great guide, very knowledgeable but also a very genuine warm interest in her group participants. This trip covered not just the Acropolis, but a nearby village, and markets so covered a lot.

Highly recommended.

A great way to experience the Acropolis and Plaka
Sep 2018 • Solo
The best advantage of taking a tour with Athens Walking Tours is the small groups. Even when you start the tour at 8:30 in the morning, the Acropolis is heaving with people and most of them walk in much larger groups. Our tour guide made sure that we could all follow him in the crowd and was very knowledgeable and friendly.
Would have loved to do more tours with this company but didn't have enough time.
Maybe next time.

Great guide, great tour

I really appreciate the walking tours as a starter introduction to any new city I'm visiting. The guide in Athens was very lively and made the tour into a marketing gig for democracy - much needed in times like today.

Wonderful Tour AND Guide
Aug 2018 • Friends
I really enjoyed my tour with Athens Walking Tours. I'm sorry I didn't make a note of our tour guide's name because he was wonderful and I would really like to acknowledge him here. Not only very knowledgeable but able to keep our interest. We saw the changing of the Guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Solder and I hadn't even realized we would. Our guide was full of information about the service of these young men and I was very impressed.
Our guide was also very kind about keeping us in the shade as much as possible (it was extremely hot) and stopping for short breaks. The archaeological site of Zeus' temple had to have been my favorite. Again, our Guide's insight and telling of the history brought the area to life for me.
The Acropolis is a must - HOWEVER, I think all who plan it should be warned - it is a VERY difficult climb. I probably would have gone even if I had known because I really wanted to see it but parts of it are dangerous and can be slippery. (A young girl fell on our way down - not someone on the tour) There is no place to sit and rest out of the sun once you are at the top and I know I missed a lot of interesting information because I was too tired to pay close attention once we got there. No fault of the tour or the guide - just a warning for everyone to be prepared and don't go in the middle of August.

Our guide was so incredibly good. This was by far my favorite tour in Europe, we headed to Florence and Rome after Athens. So incredibly knowledgeable and there was a kindness to him that was such a pleasure.
We had also signed up for the walking food tour but ended up needing to sleep in that day.. I’m sure that tour would have been excellent as well.
