I have traveled fairly extensively and enjoyed many great tours but this half day tour in Florence was my favorite. The reason for this highest compliment is because of our tour guide Paola. We were traveling in a group of nine and on 9/29 and Paola made this tour fun for everyone in our group. She was super personable, very knowledgeable, articulate, and she had a great sense of humor. We will be talking about this tour and Paola for some time. Thanks Paola.

Dear Laura, I am so glad that you enjoyed our guide Paola, I agree having some great sense of humor can make the difference. I am happy you'll have a great memory of Florence and of your guide here! Thanks so much and have a great winter! Elena

From a fairly discerning customer, I give an A+!

We did an all-day, skip the line tour with Barbara. I imagine that in a tour, the guide could really make or break a customer's experience of a city. Barbara was excellent-- very friendly, extremely knowledgeable and highly enthusiastic! We enjoyed learning not just about the art in the Uffizi or Academia, but of the various fixtures, buildings and history in and of Florence. Also, she gave some wonderful food and drink suggestions, not just during our tour, but for the remainder of our stay in Florence (they were amazing--ask for them).

Elena, the owner of Italian Vista Travel, was very professional and quick to communicate via email and WhatsApp. She went above and beyond by setting up a last minute (requested the day of) evening tour for us on a stop-over in Rome, which was also excellent! I highly recommend Italian Vista Travel and look forward to using them in future travel to Italy.

Thank you very much, Italian Vista Travel Team!

Elena Calissi, our tour guide from Italian Vista Travel took us to the plaza Santo Spirito where we visited the church, the Basilica di Santo Spirito ("Basilica of the Holy Spirit") in the Oltrarno quarter, facing the square with the same name. The interior of the building - internal length 97 meters - is one of the preeminent examples of Renaissance architecture.

At 18-years old, Michelangelo carved a wooden cross (which we saw) in thanks to the Augustinian monks who allowed him to examine and even dissect cadavers of people with no heirs or relatives to be buried in the adjacent cemetery. She told us that Michelangelo was gay and that he eventually started to over-size his creations in his art. He was a wealthy man without heirs and they found a chest under his death bed full of cash.

She took us to all of the side chapels each purchased by notable local families for internment of their dead. The church has 38 of these side chapels, which contain artworks. The most significant is the Bini-Capponi Chapel, housing the St. Monica Establishing the Rule of the Augustinian Nuns painting by Francesco Botticini. The Corbinelli chapels works are by Andrea Sansovino, Cosimo Rosselli and Donnino and Agnolo del Mazziere. In the chapels of the transept are altarpieces by Filippino Lippi. Also in the transept is a choir from which the Frescobaldi Marquisses could participate to the rites without being seen by the crowd. The sacristy, accessed through a doorway in what would have been the left sixth chapel preceded by a monumental vestibule by Simone del Pollaiolo, was designed by Giuliano da Sangallo in 1489, and has an octagonal plan. It is home to a devotional painting of St. Fiacre curing the Sick (1597) by Alessandro Allori (1596) commissioned by Christine of Lorraine, Grand Duke Ferdinando I de' Medici's wife. No photography is allowed inside.

Elena then walked us to the Accademia Gallery where I was shocked to see the extent of the long line of tourists waiting to get in. No worries. The wonderful aspect of a professional guide was our ability to skip the queue and immediately enter the Gallery, which was quite crowded. The Galleria dell'Accademia di Firenze is an art museum best known as the home of Michelangelo's sculpture, David. It has other sculptures by Michelangelo and a large collection of paintings by Florentine artists, mostly from 1300-1600. It is much smaller and more specialized than the Uffizi and after the Uffizi, the second most visited art museum in Italy.

As I walk inside amidst the crowd, I turn a corner and then I see it at the end of a corridor, people gathered all around it. An involuntary “wow” escapes my lips. I think it’s the most beautiful work of art that I have ever seen. The closer I get, the more detail I perceive. It’s truly a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture created between 1501 and 1504 by Michelangelo.

David is a 5.17-metre (17 foot) marble statue of a standing male nude, the Biblical hero, a favoured subject in the art of Florence. David is depicted as ready to fight Goliath. Brow drawn, neck tense, the veins bulge out of his lowered right hand. His left hand holds a sling, draped over his shoulder and down to his right hand, which holds a rock. He looks beautiful yet strong and prepared. For me, this represents the high point of my trip to Italy. I would readily return to Florence just to see Michelangelo’s David again.

The original David has been housed here since 1873, its previous outdoor location on Piazza della Signoria where there is a replica. The gallery's small collection of Michelangelo's work includes his four unfinished Prisoners, intended for the tomb of Pope Julius II, and a statue of Saint Matthew, also unfinished. In 1939, these were joined by a Pietà discovered in the Barberini chapel in Palestrina, but experts consider its attribution to Michelangelo to be dubious.

Other works on display are Florentine paintings from the 13th and 16th centuries, including works by Paolo Uccello, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Sandro Botticelli and Andrea del Sarto; and, from the High Renaissance, Giambologna's original full-size plaster modello for the Rape of the Sabine Women. As well as a number of Florentine Gothic paintings, the gallery houses the collection of Russian icons assembled by the Grand Dukes of the House of Lorraine, of which Leopoldo was one.

Elena, our guide, works for Italian Vista Travel, a licensed Tour operator that arranges high quality tours, activities and excursions for travelers who want to explore Italian cities through the eyes of a local guide. She was terrific. She met us at the apartment where we were staying, saves us lots of time at the Accademia Gallery and also helped us get timed tickets for easy access to the Uffizi the next day. Her background knowledge enriched our tour and she was someone who was pleasant with a good sense of humor. I highly recommend this tour company.

My entire family was disappointed with this tour. We have booked a private tour on our first day in each new city in Italy in order to orient ourselves to the city and learn about it. This is the first one we have not been happy with. Our guide was nice, and as an art historian, she might have been a good guide on an extensive museum tour, as she did a nice job in the Academia. However, on our tour we did not see many of the advertised places listed in the tour description, including the Pitti Palace, and she ended the tour in less than 2.5 hours. Approximately 1.5 hours of our tour was spent traveling from our hotel to the Academia, waiting in line to get in, and viewing David. That left 1.5 hours for our city tour of Florence but she ended the tour 35 minutes early. We did not realize it until we looked at our watches. When we got back to the hotel and read the tour description we realized all the places we should have seen but did not. As I said, our guide was nice, but not very engaging. Much of the time when walking, it was in silence, no narrative. The following day we did a cooking class in which we purchased the food from various markets in Florence, and we learned more interesting information about the city in the hour that we were walking around purchasing food than we did on this one.

Dear Freddy, thank you for your review. I am very sorry that your tour ended 35 minutes early and that you missed some of the places mentioned in the itinerary. All our guides are art historian as you mentioned but are also very friendly and talkative, they explain places you see during their time with them and speak about culture, habits and a variety of subjects that can be of interest, but most of all, they should never finish their tour earlier. Sometimes it happens the opposite, they offer their extra time in case you don't see some places in the 3 hours of the tour, as they do not work with the stop watch, or they don't realize the time that passes. You I would like to investigate what happened during your tour but with the information I see from this review I can't retrace your booking in my calendar, so if you could contact me at elena@italianvistatravel.com with your full name (the one you used for the booking of the tour) and the date of the tour I will be very glad to give you a FULL REFUND of the cost of the tour to apologize with you. I look forward to hearing from you soon, Best regards Elena

Helena met 5 of us at the entrance to our hotel and walked with us explaining the main highlights. We left out the Duomo, as we did not feel like waisting time standing in line and there was no skipping the line at the cathedral. However, the three hours tour was just enough to see the main attractions and skipping the line to visit the original David. We felt she gave us a brilliant overview and enough ideas where we wanted to go back to. It was a wet and cold day but our guide made the best of it and was able to answer all our questions. I highly recommend this tour.

Our experience was so-so with our tour of Florence. We had a guide that was pleasant but not friendly. Our tour was supposed to last 3 hours however our guide ended it early without an explanation. I would probably look for another tour if you can find one.

Dear Kristine Thank you for your review. I am happy you found our guide pleasant!!! Sorry you didn’t find our guide so friendly, they usually are as all our 5 stars reviews show!!! Regarding our tour length, it is clearly specified that it lasts 2:30 hrs (clearly written on the tour voucher and description). Moreover, our guides often offer their extra time in case clients are very interested or in case you find crowds and lines around. I don’t think the guide ended the tour earlier, maybe you misread the voucher? All the best

We wanted to do this tour mostly because we didn’t buy tickets to Academia in advance. We did like that the group was very small. We were not that impressed with the walking part of the tour before Academia, but we were SUPER impressed with the inside Academia piece. Our guide really put into context well the meaning of the renaissance and taught us a lot about the importance of the time (without being long and boring at all). I would definitely do it again, but it wasn’t on our top lists of tours ever.

Hello Marquita thank you for your feedback! I am happy you were impressed by how our guide put into context the meaning of the Renaissance inside the Accademia museum, explaining one of the most iconic works of art of the world, Michelangelo's David. I am sorry you were not much impressed by the outdoor part of the tour, I guess that rain didn't help to enjoy the city, the monuments and the streets...but we are still working to improve weather conditions :-) Thank you again!
