Mt. Etna is Europe’s largest active volcano and one of the most striking sights in Sicily, but the logistics of visiting on your own can be tricky. With this tour, save time with round-trip transportation from Taormina to the Rifugio Sapienza base station and explore the hiking trails independently. Opt to take the cable car and all-terrain vehicle to the peak for a guided hike of the upper crater.

  • Take in views over the lava fields and surrounding countryside

What to expect
  • Hop aboard your coach in central Taormina and travel one hour inland to Mount Etna. Set in the middle of a national park, the notoriously active volcano dominates the surrounding landscape. Your host will point you in the direction of the impressive Monti Silvestri Craters before you take off exploring the foothills at your own speed. Discover the myriad hiking trails along the way and soak up incredible views from all over the national park. When you’ve worked up an appetite, head to Rifugio Sapienza’s restaurant (own expense), located conveniently nearby. Alternatively, upgrade your experience with a guided trip to the volcano’s upper crater. Travel up by cable car and then by jeep to the crater zones at roughly 9,800 feet (3,000 meters). Well organised, felt rushed, not enough info about Etna
Great day up Mount Etna. I would have liked to get closer to the action of the volcano. Not much hiking involved with is good for those just wanting to tick box a volcano or Etna. Not much was was explained by the guides,up the mountain we would have loved to know more. However it was all well organised.

If you're in Catania, book a tour of Mt. Etna. It is unforgettable if you're an "outdoors person." I've been up twice, in 2016 and 2019, to different sides of the mountain. I recommend doing the mountain only, not a combo of the mountain and Taormina (Greek Theater).

Day trip to mount Etna
Nov 2019 • Couples
Whilst touring Europe on a year long trip in our motorhome we found ourselves in aTaormina camp site for Euro a night all in during the winter season. So many day trips out including this one to Etna. You can get a daily bus at 0815 from Catina main bus station if you don’t have your own transport. I inputted the coordinates into the faithful sat and off we went. The trouble with satnavs they take you the shortest route not necessarily the smoothest. Needless to say we saw lots of little villages not normally seen on the bus!! Coming back I consulted my map !! During the summer season i’m Told you can’t park your car at the nearest place to the summit and where the cable car goes from because it’s so busy. However out of season a different story. You can stay the night in the motorhome parking area, including electricity free. But come morning it’s Euro12 for the whole day. If your going to visit mount Etna it’s no good moaning about the cost, it’s the thrill of it.
First the gondola ride , 20 minutes to the highest place you can go before getting a Hugh snowcat machine , which holds 20 people. This beast then transports you to into the wilderness of Etna. When the clouds descend on you there is a perfect whiteout!
You then follow your guide to the top of a dormant crater, of which there are many and just admire the view, fantastic.
After the usual photo opportunities you descend to the waiting snowcat for your return journey to the gondola terminus.
There is a restaurant available, my hot chocolate cost Euro5- ouch!
You are advised to wear suitable clothing because it’s cold- and I mean Everest type cold. In our party of Far Eastern folk they decided sneakers, track suit bottoms and loose jumper would be ok. No scarf or gloves. They didn’t stop shivering from the word GO!!
You can hire a coat and boots for Euro9 at the top of the gondola 🚡 terminal. There is snow up top, lots of it, believe me it’s cold.
Don’t skimp on the clothing.
Our your return to the car park there are many souvenir places, so don’t just walk away afterwards, visit them. At the ‘base camp’ there are several trails you can attempt, no snow though just black lava rocks and dust. Now I mentioned cost to start with. Per Person including gondola, snowcat vehicle and guide was Euro 165.
Still standing, ok go for it, the experience will make you want to be an adventurer!
Unfortunately some days will be too cloudy to see much at all but it’s then your decision, we where lucky with blue skies till the top then it was cold and much snow, but you’ll never forget it I promise you. But keep WARM please.

Hi Jeff, thank you for the long and full of tips review. Yes, temperatures on Mount Etna can be really low especially when it is windy, so we always strongly recommend warm clothes, wind jackets and mountain shoes. Thanks for sharing your experience on the highest volcano in Europe. Warm greetings, Guest Relation Manager SAT Group

Great life time experience not to be missed.
Sep 2019
We debated along with many others on our trip whether we should visit Mount Etna as the cost which varied between €45 -€65 Euros seemed steep ,but we decided to go.We travelled to the cable car station via coach where some stayed. We paid €30 and caught the cable car up to the next level which was about 7000 feet. There we jumped on a truck (€30) and went up to just below the crater (8500 feet)where we picked up a guide. Then up to the ridge. If you have the money and opportunity pay the additional €60 and take the cable car and truck up to the top.The experience is great with the volcano blowing dust and smoke out every ten minutes ,making popping noises and creating dust and black cloud. Two tips, firstly at the top level the air is light and can make you short of breath ,normal for the height ,but think if you have a medical condition.Secondly, check the weather,if it’s a clear day go to the top,on cloudy days the top is shrouded with cloud.Great once in a life time experience not to be missed.Remember carry a jumper it’s cold on top ,also take some chocolate or mints for energy when your up and a small bottle of water.Shorts will be cold ,wear firm soled shoes/trainers and trousers.

Well organised full day tour from Taormina. 2 different buses for various languages! Elisabet and driver were great. Do include the cable car, where you will be met by incredibly hard working Etna Guides. Fantastic landscape - like the moon ... Etna gave us smoke plumes too! Brilliant photo ops everywhere. We left Taormina at 8am and left Etna at 2.15pm. It started to cloud over afterwards, so be careful of the weather.

Trip to the top
The guide on the coach from Taomina was fantastic and very informative.
The whole trip was well organised and ran well.
However it was a blizzard when we got to the top so the guide at the top didn't tell us very much as it was freezing.
Well worth doing though. A great experience.

Hi Ginette W, what a pity, we are missing one point because it was freezing on the top of Etna! By the way, it is necessary to bring warm clothes as it can be really cold and windy at 3000 meters. Thanks for sharing the tip. Warm regards, Guest Relations Manager SAT Group

Mt Etna

We had a wonderful, albeit a long day. Went to Sicily by catamaran from Malta. Tour bus took us first to Toarmina for a couple of hrs. The ride up the mountain was a bit daunting but the driver was very skilled. The shopping in the little town was a lovely experience. Outdoor shops and restaurants with no car traffic was fantastic. After that was a trip to a small mountain village that offered local goods for sale. Then off to Mt Etna, more mountain driving!!!
Totally exhilarating experience!! Just being that high in the clouds!!! The day was spectacular!! Totally recommend this adventure!!

Great Etna trip with a marvellous Guide & Coach Driver
Sep 2019
We booked a day trip to Mount Etna from the shop in Taormina. The rep. said that the coach could pick us up from Giardini Naxos, which was even better. On collection we were welcomed by the Guide and led to our seats. Once everybody was on board, the Guide (who was impressively multi-lingual) gave us a running commentary of the sights, local flora, vista and history of the Mountain and locality. We were chaperoned all the way time and made to feel very much at ease.
The whole trip was a delight, and my admiration goes to the driver who seemed to be able to get the coach through streets I would have been nervous about driving.
Highly recommended!

A trip to Etna
Sep 2019 • Friends
We were picked up by taxi from our hotel in Taormina and driven to Etna, stopping at places of interest en route. Climbing up the volcano, lava fields from past eruptions and other places of interest were pointed out. We could stop and take photos when we wished. The area where you catch the cable car is filled with cafes, restaurants and shops. The cable car takes you further up the volcano and to reach the summit you ascend in 4 wheel buses. The ground is like thick black soot or black sand. The people who were walking to the top, their feet sunk into the black dust, it looked like hard work!! I thoroughly enjoyed the day, Etna was not like other volcanoes l have visited. I would recommend this excursion to anyone who is interested in natural, geographic features.
