Overview
Immerse yourself in the history, architecture and lore of St. Peter’s Basilica with this all-access tour. Not only will you enjoy a full guided tour of the Basilica and Papal Crypt (not usually included Basilica and Vatican tours) with an expert guide, you’ll avoid long lines to climb up into the titanic dome early in the morning, and gape at the  amazing views of Rome.
Highlights
  • A small-group tour makes for a personal way to discover this landmark
  • Enjoy guaranteed admission to the basilica’s soaring dome
  • Explore the papal crypt, which most tour groups miss
  • See the church’s famous masterpieces, including Michelangelo’s Pietà
What to Expect
Meet your guide at a convenient location just outside of St. Peter’s Square. In order to beat the crowds, and make the most of this world-famous landmark before long lines form, the tour kicks off in the early morning. See the Swiss Guard in St. Peter’s Square before entering the basilica. With just a small group for company, you’re promised an intimate way of discovering the church. Your first stop is the basilica’s soaring dome, to which you have guaranteed admission. Board an elevator to its first viewing platform before walking up several hundred stairs to its summit, which offers panoramic views overlooking the city. Next, you’ll return to ground level and will discover some of the artistic masterpieces hidden within the church, including Bernini’s bronze altar and Michelangelo’s Pietà. Learn more of the stories and history behind St. Peter's Basilica from your guide. Your final stop is the papal crypt—a part of the landmark most visitors don’t see. Descend into its silent depths and discover some of its most significant tombs before the tour concludes.

With Rick Steves in our ears we headed out very early and it was totally worth it. The light in the square was beautiful. But better still, we practically had the basilica to ourselves the first hour. And when we were ready for the dome...More
