Positive Experience
Feb 2020
My friend and I chose this tour at the last minute after deciding that trying to visit these sights alone would be too difficult. We were very happy with our decision. The tour was very fast, as it was only half a day, but provided just enough time to see almost everything. We had chosen to bring a lunch with us, which we appreciated as it allowed us to spend more time looking around at the Valley of the Fallen. Our tour guide was good and did a great job of providing the tour in both Spanish and English simultaneously. This tour had a lot of walking and stairs. If that is difficult for you, especially at a fast pace this tour may be difficult. We would recommend this tour.

Very rushed
We were allotted 90 minutes to see everything of interest in El Escorial, which was nowhere near enough time. The earphones only worked intermittently, and if you didnt keep a close eye on the guide, she would move onto the next room and you would lose her. If you do this particular tour just so you can say you've been to El Escorial, then this will do... If you want to learn anything though, pick a different tour.

Dear janehU1247RC, Thank you for sharing you experience. Firstly I would like to apologise that the tour did not meet your expectations and that you felt at any time that there was not enough time to fully enjoy your time at El Escorial. Kindly take note that we do revise the state of our radio guide in order to assure their proper functioning, however some technical issues may appear during the tour. I will transfer your comments to the corresponding department in order to solve this problem. Sincerely, Alex B.

Huge historical and functioning monastery
Nov 2019
It looks a bit bleak from the outside but ginormous. The guide was good. It is a school , functioning monastery and burial place of royalty, including present. The library is spectular and huge as is everything in this place. There isn't a cafe at the monastery so it is worth having a snack at the coach station. The toilets are at the gift shop as you enter the main gates. It's worth seeing.

We booked this tour 3 months prior to our trip as my husband wanted to see the Valley of the Fallen. When we arrived at the travel office on the morning of the tour, we were informed that the Valley of the Fallen was closed due to the exhumation of Franco. Okay, I realized this was not their fault. However, they refused to give an alternate tour or refund. We really did not even care to see El Escorial, so when we were told we would spend extra time there to make up for missing Valley of the Fallen, it didn't really make up for missing what we really wanted to see.
Our guide was horrible... walking quickly and never looking back to see who was on her tour, let alone if we were keeping her pace. I also speak Spanish and so when she did her narration, I was aware that she went into far more detail in the Spanish version than the English one.
Our extra time at El Escorial was about half an hour of free time to wander the unimpressive gardens and take pictures.
When I returned from Spain, I requested a refund through Trip Advisor. They tried to get me the 50% refund I requested, but we only received a refund of $19.00 after spending over $140 on this tour.
I was disappointed that we were not notified ahead of time that Valley of the Fallen was closed and offered other options. It was unacceptable and the amount of the refund was insulting.
I will never use this company again and will advise my friends and family to avoid them also.

Dear Leisa M, I regret the fact that the tour did not meet your expectations. Kindly take note that we offered the refund for the proportional part of The Valley of the Fallen. As you mentioned in your review it was closed during your visit due to the exhumation of Franco wich was totally out of our control Noitice that as soon as we got the official statement concerning the closing of the Valley we informed all of our clients accordingly. Sincerely, Alex B.

Went beyond call of duty
The staff of Julia travel and the coach company they use went beyond the call of duty for me. We had a great tour of the Escorial today with guide Silvia and driver José. When I got off the coach back in Madrid I realised immediately I had left my IPhone on board. But the coach had left. I found another driver still there and with the help of another Julia Travel guide they called the first driver, José, who was already on the way out of Madrid. They arranged to drop me and my daughter at a hotel, where José sent the mobile phone in a taxi! What service! Thank you very much.

El Escorial was fantastic
Oct 2019 • Couples
Definitely worth seeing for the Cathedral, Two places and Library.
The day we went Valley of the Fallen was closed.
The down side was don’t go with Julia Travel. There was poor communication about whether the trip would even go ahead, we turned up and were treated like cattle, the guide was aloof and we had to wait for ages while when he disappeared to later say there were ticket issues. Yet we got a lecture about not being slow getting of the bus as we would miss out on our ‘time slot’. There was no sorry or compensation for not going to Valley of Fallen.
I understand it was not their fault but it was dismissed in an arrogant way.
Definitely worth going but not with Julia!

More that meets the eye
Oct 2019 • Couples
The tour was more than meets the eye. The exterior of the Monastery was stark, not what I expected for 16th century architecture but what was inside was amazing. The monastery library was spectacular as was the kings residence and the burial area of the Spanish monarchs. The Valley of the Fallen was as expected after viewing on line. Divergent feelings about the memorial of the dead from the Spanish Civil War. The construction was impressive. Julia Travel did a fine job.
