Overview

Learn the ins and outs of Paris’ Opera Garnier on this guided walking tour that covers all of the highlights. As you walk, listen to your guide's commentary on the history of the building and its neo-baroque architecture. Visit the auditorium, the Member's Rotunda, the Grand Escalier, and the Grand Foyer of one of the largest opera houses in Europe. Plus, enjoy free time to explore on your own after your tour.

What to Expect
Make your way to Paris' Opera Garnier, where you’ll meet your guide and group. Listen to your guide talk about the Charles Garnier–designed building, one of the largest and most opulent opera houses in Europe.

Step carefully over the inlaid mosaic floor of the Member's Rotunda, and then snap photos of the main staircase (Grand Escalier), covered with bronze friezes of Greek gods and goddesses. Hear about how Opera Garnier inspired the setting for Gaston Leroux’s novel The Phantom of the Opera (and, later, the musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber).

Visit the impressive auditorium, and see the Grand Foyer, where patrons take a break between acts. Learn about Garnier's inspiration and his goals to make the building look like a typical French chateau. Afterward, you you can continue to explore on your own.

Upgrade your tour to visit the theater after hours, which means less crowds and a more intimate atmosphere.

Over the top opulence

Don't pass up this over embellished opera house and home to the Paris Opera Ballet. The gilded decor and marble staircases obviously have witnessed stories of passion, intrique and romance quite apart from The Phantom. A stop at Café de la Paix before or after...More

Great Visit to an Earlier Time

The guide was very good, explaining things clearly and pointing out things we wouldn't have noticed. The audio system made it easy to hear everything clearly. There were lots of historical and artistic facts. It only made me want to see a performance there.

Beaux Arts Grandeur

This was a great tour. The building is an over-the-top Beaux Arts example, with that famous stair. The tour was well organized and informative, and included a great opportunity for photos (which will all come out great)
