Leith Walk Food Safari - we've walked up and down the road from Leith to Edinburgh many times over the years and often remarked on the huge variety of food shops and cafes but never stepped inside one. Nell's Safari seemed the ideal way to explore the options and get to try the good ones out. Our visit did not disappoint, from the cheery smiling welcome from Nell when we arrived in Joseph Pearce's until we finished at the Leith end of the walk, we really enjoyed ourselves and learnt a lot about the history of the Walk along the way. Hard to choose but our favourite food items were the savoury boreks and sweet baklavas at Kukina, although the novelty of eating plantain and Kenyan/Indian fusion in an Edinburgh cafe (Knights) was also a memorable event. Overall, a great way to check out the many eateries and food stores in this area with plenty of time to chat and enjoy the food at each stop. A light or non-existent breakfast beforehand is recommended to make the most of each location's offerings! Nell also points out other places along the way which time (and waistlines) prevent us from visiting on this trip, but we will explore further on future visits. We both thoroughly recommend this trip.

We’ve never been on a food safari before and the experience was wonderful. We got to see a part of Edinburgh we wouldn’t have otherwise seen and the food was really good quality. Even our picky nine year old enjoyed herself!

We started with a scone at the Raeburn before moving on to cheese tasters in a local park area. We then had Scottish salmon before sitting down to a haggis lunch. The haggis was the best we had while we’re in Scotland and my partner appreciated the vegetarian option.

We then had a gin, iron brew for the young one which is now one of her favourite drinks. Finally, we finished with a visit to the Marshmellow Lady!

Nell was an exceptional guide through out. I was really impressed that she had taken the time to do a history course so she could educate you on the Stockbridge and Cannonmills area as you walked round the sites.

I would highly recommend the Edinburgh Food Safari to anyone who visits Edinburgh. Now we have experienced them I will be looking for food safari experiences in every city we go to as well.

Thank you Nell for such a wonderful experience!

Cracking tour led by tour guide Bob through the gorgeous Georgian new town to well-heeled Stockbridge.
Salmon, haggis, scones, doughnuts, cheese, beer and whisky - what a way to sample some of the best Edinburgh fare while learning more about the city's rich history.
Three hours well spent with our excellent guide Bob - good to talk with Dutch party on our tour to get their thoughts on the city and UK in general.
Highly recommended!

Very expensive for what you get. Essentially only two stops for over £50 was excessive. The guide had zero charisma and often spoke into the wind and couldn’t be heard. It was more of a “walk quickly around New Town” than a food tour. It’s like this guide has never actually been on a tour herself as she didn’t even bother to get to know the guests. In fact she even forgot one of the guests and refused him food at the last stop! Quite rudely too - hands out blocking him from the counter saying over and over “no no no, he’s not on my tour!!”. Perhaps he would have been better not to have the donut anyway, which was incredibly mediocre - tasting like it was a few days old.

I am so sorry you thought the Edinburgh gin liqueur, oak-smoked salmon and three artisan Scottish cheeses, single malt whisky and haggis with peppercorn sauce and filled doughnut did not qualify as a food tour. I am sorry if you did not hear me, whilst we walked through the stunning New Town (being quiet is something that I have never been accused of before !) I am sorry you did not engage with me in any way during the food and walking tour. And I am truly sorry I did not recognise you under your baseball cap in the doughnut shop . And I am sorry you did not hear the lovely Kilted Doughnut manager describe how the doughnuts are made fresh every morning at 3am. I am sorry you did not enjoy my tour – I can only hope your day got better.

Did this tour as part of the Edinburgh Fringe. I found the historical input quite interesting, our guide was very friendly and willing to have a banter and answer questions. We enjoyed exchanging stories with the other guests in the group who we had never met before. I have a couple of comments on the food side. It says on the Tripadviser site that you meet butchers and fishmongers. We didn’t meet any.

The first sitting was smoked salmon, cheese and oatcakes, very good. The second sitting was in a nice traditional pub. We were served haggis deep fried in a ball and mashed potato. Not as shown on the Tripadviser page and certainly not what real Scots are used to, Our guide alluded to the fact that folk who weren’t used to haggis might be wary of both ingredients (not telling you here) and how it was served. She maybe didn’t expect Scots on the tour! There weren’t any ‘neeps’ (mashed turnip), would have been better and more authentic, that’s what we Scots eat on Burn’s night. At the third stop we were served donuts....the various donuts with imaginative names aren’t traditional Scottish fare but from the shop owners visit to New Orleans! Cranachan would have been more appropriate. Altogether quite expensive for what could have been better.

I created the Fringe walking food tour as a special two-hour Scottish Food tour over lunchtime so Fringe goers could walk through the gracious New Town eat and get back to their shows. You booked the Fringe Tour: And I quote from the programme: Why are there painted windows in the new Town? Find out why over a gin liqueur cocktail, smoked salmon, fantastic Scottish cheeses, whisky and meat or veggie haggis, plus a surprising sweet newcomer” THIS IS TOTALLY WHAT YOU GOT! I only wish you have told me you wanted to meet a butcher or a fishmonger! I could have arranged such a meeting – as this is promised on another longer tour . I also run an international food tour on Leith Walk with Swedish meatballs, Greek olive and feta pastres, Portuguese egg tarts, Greek orange cake… I am glad you are not accusing me of failing to deliver these fine foods! I believe Scotland is a forward looking country open to innovation – I never promised haggis, turnip and potatoes – quite a meal on hot day – I offered a contemporary version which is very popular in a local Scottish pub – where local Scots eat- haggis fritters with creamed potato and peppercorn sauce and also veggie haggis with turnips and chips. I find most visitors like to eat where the locals eat and what the locals eat in a very popular restaurant. I also believe Scotland welcomes people of all nations who choose to make their home and their living in Scotland. The Kilted Doughnut is owned by a Scottish man and his American wife who want to offer Scots a taste of New Orleans. Is that so bad? And should we Scots be condemned to always have Cranachan (oatmeal, cream, raspberries) at every dessert opportunity? The Kilted Doughnut has a range of 60 changing fillings – indeed Cranachan is just one. The day we visited you could have had a berry surprise – doughnut filled with Scottish berries and cream or one with a Scottish strawberry glaze – just a little variation on a Scottish berry theme .

Nell is a force of nature. We really appreciated her histories of the architecture and development of Stockbridge and New Town. The food professionals were very welcoming and forthcoming; the preparation of monk fish was mesmerising. We enjoyed plenty of splendid food during the tour, and took away bulging goodie bags which kept us supplied with treats for days. Nell kindly organised an early morning breakfast tour and was able to include gluten free treats for one of our party

Nell was our introduction to the city of Edinburgh. She led us, she entertained us, and she fed us some amazing food and beverages. Her knowledge of the area we walked around was fantastic and we were able to get all kinds of bits of trivia. Our relationship with food and beverage vendors is obviously exceptional because they treated us like family. It was so much fun to taste the different foods including haggis. I cannot recommend this tour highly enough!

Had a great time on this food tour of the New Town of Edinburgh. Sampled some great Scottish foods including locally made cheese and smoked salmon. Then stopped at a couple of local pubs to try haggis as well as a gin liqueur fizz cocktail. The food was great and our guide Nell was knowledgeable about both the local food scene and the history of New Town. We capped it off with a desert of the best marshmallows you will find anywhere! If you are hoping to see a bit of Edinburgh a bit off of the royal mile from a local’s perspective I can’t recommend this tour highly enough!
