Overview
Walking Derry's historic walls will take you around 1.4 km (0.87 miles) of one of the best preserved walled cities in Europe. Built in 1613 the walls are utilised in telling the history of Derry. Starting in the Monastic period (6th century) the history of Derry unfolds Nine Years War, Plantation of Ulster, 1641 Rebellion, Siege of Derry 1689, 1798 Rebellion the Great Hunger and more. This tour offers you 90 minutes of Irish history explored and explained.
Highlights
  • A private guide makes for a fully personal way to explore Derry
  • Walk the entire perimeter of Derry’s 17th-century city walls
  • Get an overview of top Derry landmarks during the tour
  • Hear details from the city’s long history from your guide
What to Expect
Meet your guide at a time and place of your choosing—a private tour means you have convenience and flexibility on your side—and set off on a walk around the entire circumference of Derry’s 17th-century walls, which stretch about 1 mile (1.5 kilometers). Northern Ireland’s second-largest city, and the only completely walled city in all of Ireland, Derry has thousands of years of history behind it. During your private tour, your guide shares stories from the city’s past, from the earliest settlements thousands of years ago to its monastic period and the series of wars that marked its history. As you go, you also see the wall’s sights—including its seven gates and 24 hand-restored cannons—and admire views overlooking the city. The tour ends when you walk the length of the wall, at a time and place that is convenient to your itinerary.
