Great way to spend an hour exploring the river from a different view. The skipper was very informative and it was a perfect start to the evening. Went in October so it starts getting dark at 6pm but the boat has lights which light up the banks slightly and its very atmospheric with the city lights too. Small bar on board which sells hot drinks and alcohol. Bottom deck is heated, top deck has the best view but you need to be warmly dressed!

I booked this as a last minute experience whilst staying in York, I wanted to book the evening meal tour but this was fully booked. However this being said we thoroughly enjoyed the experience we chose to sit on top deck which we felt provided the best views for all of the sights (even though it was freezing cold) we had such a wonderful time. Our skipper Laurie was brilliant and had me laughing at all of his dad jokes all the way through the tour. This has made me want to experience the dinner cruise even more so on our next visit
Well worth the money paid 👍🏼

I wanted to book the evening cruise as I thought I’d get the best of both worlds by starting in daylight and finishing at night, maybe with a lovely sunset inbetween. No sunset sadly, but I did see a kingfisher fly past a few times! I’m afraid I can’t remember the name of our skipper but he had a Viking look about him and he was very informative and funny. One thing that could be improved is communication about pre booking/buying on the day/when to turn up as we decided to wing it and just buy a ticket when the boat arrived and were waiting for about 45 mins as we saw a sign that said to turn up early but we didn’t actually need to. Also bring a coat if you want to sit on the roof!

Thank you for your review. You were lucky to see a Kingfisher, not many do. We are sorry to hear the communication regarding purchasing a ticket was confusing. We do recommend that you are there early to purchase tickets as it can be very busy in summer.

Get all the speakers working so people
Can listen to what's being said. We were told when we said we couldn't hear, that probably the speakers at the front weren't working and they didn't want the volume too high so it hurts peoples ears. No chance of that. We expected a narrated tour but couldn't even hear the safety information let alone anything else. Appalling experience. As people couldn't hear they spoke loudly amongst themselves. Everything said was muffled on top of which several party groups were on board making it a party boat not a narrated river cruise. City cruises this deserves a refund we paid £60 for 4 people and it was awful.

Heavily disappointed! On the evening in question it was raining heavy. Despite arriving 20 minutes before departure time (you can arrive up to 30 minutes ahead) the only seating available due to social distancing was out the back under a tarpaulin with plastic windows where the rain made the view impossible. It was also sat right above the engine so you couldn’t hear the tour guide either so it became a glorified boat ride.
We asked for the tannoy to be turned up but this made no difference and when we spoke to the staff at the end they advised there was nothing that could be done.
As they can’t avoid social distancing or control the weather, they should avoid prebookings where this area of the boat is relied upon as you do not receive the service you pay for!
Nothing stopping them selling on the spot tickets at the destination should the weather permit but prebooks should be limited to the indoor capacity.
After complaining via email I’ve been offered less that 50% refund so this just compounds the disappointment experienced by this booking
Will not book again!

We are here for five days on our first trip to York. Sadly this cruise has been our only disappointing outing so far.

We were hoping to learn more about the history of York but we simply couldn’t understand the guide. Admittedly I’m a bit deaf and probably only understood about 2% of what he was saying, but my husband and 18 year old daughter, both with good hearing, could still only understand about 10% of it.

I don’t know if the actual speaker or the speaker system was the problem - or more likely a bit a both - but it was perceived as a stream of very nasal sing songy sound without enunciation or clear breaks between words and sentences. It wasn’t just us, as when the commentary started the people around us at other tables all looked at each other with vague amusement, but this quickly changed to frustration as the trip progressed!

The other extremely annoying thing was the girl/woman behind the bar who launched empty bottles into wherever she was launching them with what sounded like great enthusiasm and force. Each time she did this, which was frequently, we along with everyone around us half jumped out of our skin. We all joked that it if carried on for much longer we would happily launch her into the river with equal gusto.

Shame as we were really looking forward to this, especially considering absolutely everything and everyone else we have encountered in York has been a wonderful experience.
On the plus side we witnessed a lovely sunset across the water, and it was nice to see so many people out enjoying themselves as they sat at the twinkly lit tables and bars that lined the river edge.

Did the hour early evening river cruise during a girls trip away and I probably wouldn't do it again but it was an okay way to kill an hour before dinner. The staff were nice, especially the lady loading us onto the boat and the captain was informative. However, I think the drinks are so expensive for what they are - £23 for a bottle of Prosecco?

Watching sunset from the boat was a lovely experience, especially with a drink served by the charming crew member. What was intensely irritating was the fantasy commentary where false facts were fed to many people who may not have realised that they were being told wrong information: York has the oldest Guildhall in England (wrong London's Guildhall is 48 years older); York Minster is the biggest Cathedral in the Country (Liverpool Cathedral is quite a lot bigger as is St. Pauls In London); St Peter's school is the oldest in the UK (its not even the oldest in York as that honour goes to the Minster school however King's Canterbury is 30 years older). York has enough impressive history without these exagerated claims. Not only was so much of the information incorrect, it felt that we were being patronised by an ignoramous. A bit disappointing.

Had a lovely evening cruise up the river Ouse. The skipper Laurie and Raffi were very freindly. Really enjoyed it very interesting facts and very well presented, really charismatic, made our trip very enjoyable. Really well organised and great value for money. Will certainly do it again.

It was virtually impossible to hear the captains commentary on either the outer upper deck or inside on the lower deck. The commentary was a main part of the cruise and without it, it was a mare boat trip as there wasn't much to see or look out for!! I certainly wouldn't recommend it, your money would be better spent elsewhere. A real pity!!
