I decided to fly China Southern despite hearing negative stories, but my experience was disastrous. The journey started smoothly in Osaka, but upon arriving at Guangzhou for a 2 hour layover, I was informed that my connecting flight required a transit visa because the terminal I was to go to was outside the terminal that landed—a detail neither the airline’s website nor the Osaka China Southern staff had mentioned. As a Kenyan national, I was denied a transit visa, and I soon discovered that other passengers from developing countries, including Pakistan, Uganda, Tanzania, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, faced the same issue. A Pakistani lady was stuck for 48 hours and the rude stuff were asking her to wait longer for another 72 hours. There was only airplane food and no place to sleep.
The airline staff were rude and unhelpful, offering impractical solutions such as suggesting I buy another China Southern ticket while stranded. They couldn’t guarantee the safety of my luggage, which would have been delayed for 24 hours on another Kenya Airways flight. After hours of frustration and being misinformed about flight options, I managed to get assistance to board a Qatar Airways flight, but only after significant effort and a 14 hours delays.
This experience showed me how poorly China Southern treats passengers from certain countries (developing countries), failing to communicate essential information and providing subpar customer service. I strongly advise travelers from developing nations, especially those needing transit through Guangzhou, to avoid China Southern Airlines. It’s worth spending more on an airline that respects and supports all passengers equally.
